Politics: Herman Cain is no friend of Occupy Wall Street

  • “I don’t have facts to back this up, but I happen to believe…”: Herman Cain is downright unimpressed with Occupy Wall Street, and he’s not afraid to let us know it. We suspect those of you who are sympathetic to (or participating in) this movement probably weren’t likely Cain voters anyways, but his strident denunciation here probably won’t win him any converts: “It is not a person’s fault if they succeeded, it is a person’s fault if they failed.” source

Politics: Obama pressures Congress to take more action

  • If Congress does something, then I can’t run against a do-nothing Congress. [If they do nothing] then I think the American people will run them out of town.
  • President Barack Obama • Answering a reporter’s question whether he was pursuing a similar reelection strategy to that of Harry Truman’s 1948 campaign against a “do-nothing Congress.” Obama has used a tougher, more confrontational rhetorical style against Congress lately, and while this does have much to do with his push on his proposed jobs bill, you needn’t be a cynic to see this as a desirable campaign strategy. source

U.S.: Suspect in lethal Cupertino shooting believed to be dead

  • Three dead, six injured: Shareef Allman, the man chiefly suspected to have committed a deadly shooting at a quarry in Cupertino, California, may have been shot dead by Santa Clara Sheriff’s deputies earlier today. According to one of the men injured in the attack, Allman had clocked in and poured himself a cup of coffee before drawing a gun and opening fire on those around him; what (if any) motive he might have had to commit the crime is unclear. source

Culture: NBA players, owners face big day for fate of new season

  • Each side understands exactly what’s at stake and where potentially there is movement in order to try to get a deal done… We both understand that if we don’t make our best offers in the next few days, we’re going to be at the point where we’re going to be causing damage to the game, to ourselves, and they’re going to be out paychecks.
  • NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver • Discussing the negotiations between NBA players and team owners, which have reached a critical stage with the regularly scheduled start of the season looming. Ownership claims to have lost a combined $300 million last season, and have pushed for new rules on the salary cap and division of revenues, wanting to guarantee the players only 46% of team revenue rather than their former 57%. source

World: Islamic militants detonate truck bomb in Somali capitol

  • Be warned, the video shows some graphic images from the scene. The truck bomb attack killed at least 70 people, and injured dozens more, the most deadly terrorist attack in Somalia in five years. The militant Islamist group Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility, just two months after they retreated from the capitol of Mogadishu, pledging to wage guerilla war against the weak and tenuous interim government. Said a BBC journalist on-site: “…I genuinely feel, it is the worst incident I have seen here in Mogadishu.” source

  • then Back in June, a prolific television pitchman named Donald Lapre (who dubbed himself the “king of infomercials”) was charged with 41 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering — the result of his scheme to market a bogus “Greatest Vitamin in the World.”
  • now Mapre was found dead in his prison cell in Arizona, of an apparent suicide. He was imprisoned for missing his initial court date for the charges; his trial had been scheduled for tomorrow. Authorities are investigating how he may have killed himself. source

World: Amanda Knox acquitted of murder by Italian court

  • Amanda Knox acquitted: The climactic trial of the moment came to a conclusion today, as an Italian court acquitted Amanda Knox of murder. The judge did uphold a slander conviction over Knox’s claim that a bar owner committed the crime, but that sentence is already covered by her time served; she’s been imprisoned since 2007. It’s reported that some members of the jury, as well as some journalists in the room were moved to tears by Knox’s declarations of innocence, which sounds like a pretty bad time to a be a prosecutor. Knox is now free to head back home to her native Seattle, where a large contingent of supporters are expected to greet her. (Photo by Pier Paolo Cito/AP) source

Politics: Memos reveal Obama warned not to visit Solyndra

  • A number of us are concerned that the president is visiting Solyndra. Many of us believe the company’s cost structure will make it difficult for them to survive long term. . . . I just want to help protect the president from anything that could result in negative or unfair press.
  • Investor and Obama fundraiser Steve Westly • From a memo sent to Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett in May, 2010. The document was released by Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, charged with investigating the failed government loan. Whatever your political opinion on this issue, these are certainly the sorts of warnings you’d hope the administration would take seriously; there’s mounting evidence that people within the industry were skeptical of the company well in advance of the President’s visit. source

World: Fighting rages in Sirte, Libyan NTC reclaims airport

  • Dangerous times for civilians in Sirte: The Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) has regained control of the Sirte airport, amidst fighting throughout the city. The airport had been under NTC control previously, but two weeks ago loyalists of deposed dictator Muammar Gaddafi (who was born in Sirte) recaptured it. Gaddafi loyalists have reportedly used rockets and sniper fire to fend off the NTC’s assaults on the city. Some of Sirte’s 100,000 residents have chosen to flee, as attacks by both sides pose fatal risks to the civilian population. source

Politics: UC Berkeley administration sends open letter condemning “diversity bake sale”

  • Forbearance and consciousness of how one’s actions may affect others should always be a strong consideration. We celebrate the exchange of ideas through the freedoms we share as a nation, but intelligent debate is based on mutual respect. Freedom of speech is not properly exercised without taking responsibility for its impact. Taking that responsibility does not negate the freedom, it brings an enhanced humanity to it.
  • A letter by UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, and two Vice Chancellors • Condemning the UC Berkeley College Republicans and their “Increase Diversity Bake Sale,” which priced its confections on a sliding scale based on race and gender. It’s intended as a criticism of a bill awaiting signature by Gov. Jerry Brown, which would allows UCs to consider race, gender and ethnicity in their admissions process. We couldn’t agree more with those arguing this is an ineffective means to have a debate, is absurdly reductive, and seems designed to spark the kind of discord that kills any chance of nuanced discussion — in short, it’s a bad idea all around. We will say this, though: Berkeley’s reputation as a haven of free speech needs an inclusiveness for all types of speech to be credible. The BCR has a compelling argument that the administration is telling them in what way they should speak, despite the fact their message, while no doubt horribly offensive to many, isn’t really violent or existentially threatening to the student body. We’re not so crazy about that. (h/t bsig) source
