Tech: Steve Jobs on subscriber service: We won’t always take 30 percent

  • Our philosophy is simple – when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing.
  • Steve Jobs (who’s still on medical leave) • In a statement announcing the new App Store subscription service, which reveals a pretty awesome financial path for publishers of all stripes. Apple will take their 30 percent revenue share if they lead to the subscription; if the publisher does it, they keep 100 percent. One interesting thing to note is the way that the service handles consumer information. Many magazine publishers make money by using consumer information from their subscriber base – a move somewhat at odds with Apple’s App Store model. In a compromise move, Apple will allow consumers to say how much information they want to give out. The overall model is similar to that of The Daily, which launched last month to general praise. source

U.S., World: Dalai Lama’s nephew killed in unfortunate car accident

  • Yesterday, Jigme K. Norbu, the nephew of the Dalai Lama, started a 300-mile walk across Florida (with a large group of other people, by the way) to help raise awareness for the Tibetan Independence Movement. He didn’t get very far. Norbu was hit by a car less than 50 miles from his starting point, near the end of the first leg of the journey, off the coastal State Road A1A. A terrible, meaningless accident. source

World: Berlusconi’s facing trial in wild underage prostitution case

  • YES Berlusconi’s trial starts in April; get yo cameras ready!
  • yes The girl Berlusconi reportedly had paid for sex was over the age of consent in Italy, which is a fairly-young 14.
  • yes Prostitution in Italy is also pretty much legal, meaning that Berlusconi likely broke no laws for simply paying for sex.
  • no Paying for sex with someone under 18 isn’t legal. Ruby Heart-Stealer wasn’t 18 before the incident. Oops. source
  • » And there’s an Egypt tie to this story, too: Perhaps the most bizarre spare detail of the entire incident might be the reason why Berlusconi was caught this time. See, Ruby Heart-Stealer, a Moroccan whose real name is Karima El Mahroug, was arrested last May for theft, and he called the Police to intervene – because, get this, he believed she was Hosni Mubarak’s niece. Random. Berlusconi and Heart-Stealer both deny they had sex, though there must have been an interesting story about how they met, then. Right?

Politics: Max Headroom: Ron Paul’s feeling pretty good after CPAC, guys

  • Ron Paul makes his victory lap: If there was one guy who came out of CPAC looking better than he did going in, it was Paul, whose straw-poll win gave him some momentum as he went on “Morning Joe” this morning. Paul, always one to speak his mind, interestingly puts many Tea Partiers in the same camp as traditional Republicans for not going all the way with their anti-tax beliefs. Our favorite part of the clip is where Joe Scarborough brings up military spending, with Paul being very careful to emphasize that “defense spending” is a misnomer.
  • Barbara Bush mocks John Boehner Nothing like looking back at family history to get the waterworks going, which Jenna Bush Hager and her famous grandparents, George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, are more than happy to do. But what wasn’t expected is Barbara’s goofy rip on the house speaker, where she says to George, during one emotional scene, “You could be Speaker of the House!” LOL.
  • Did she have a stroke? In one of the more unfortunate clips to go viral in the past week or so, KCBS reporter Serene Branson had an unfortunate post-Grammy moment where she started talking in gibberish live on the air. Unfortunately for those who made fun of her, she was possibly having a stroke-like medical crisis, so now you should feel guilty for making fun of her, monsters.
