U.S.: This Philly abortion clinic story makes us freaking sick

  • 45 fetuses were just hanging around the Philadelphia clinic (ugh)
  • nine clinic workers were charged along with Dr. Kermit Gosnell
  • one patient reportedly died in Gosnell’s utterly disgusting care source
  • » Breaking the rules, and then some: The clinic was performing illegal late-term abortions en masse, some as late as eight months in. He would induce birth and then … ugh, we don’t even want to talk about it. The fetuses were aborted so late in pregnancy that Gosnell, whose clinic was a mess, will be charged with murder for the fetuses along with the mother who died. No matter where you fall on the abortion debate, we can probably all agree that this is not how they should be done – with bent and gruesomely ignored rules all over the place. *shudder*

U.S.: LA mayor speaks out on possibly accidental school shooting

The seventeen-year-old who is responsible reportedly brought an automatic handgun to school in his backpack, and during his class it fired, wounding two students. source

  • Charm City’s Top Cop: Frederick H. Bealefeld, Commissioner of Baltimore Police, does not care for your “critically acclaimed television.” Why couldn’t McNulty be a hip, cool CSI type? source

Offbeat: George Lucas is prepared for doomsday, are you?

  • George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real… He’s going on about the tectonic plates and all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes…
  • Seth Rogen • Relating the story of a movie meeting he recently had with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, wherein Lucas (apparently at some length) detailed his belief that the world will end in 2012. We especially like the idea of Spielberg as Lucas’ reluctant adult in the room.  source

Politics: Republicans reel back rhetoric, to a remote extent

  • job-killing An awkward choice of words for congressional Republicans to use against the Health Care Reform law, in light of recent events.
  • job-crushing A change of rhetoric that clearly ushers in a new age of civility in our politics. Or, a less pointed way of saying “job-killing.” source

U.S.: The craziest gas-main-explosion video we’ll post today

  • It’s sometimes scary in Philadelphia. This clip is not the climatic scene from an awesome ’80s action flick. No, it’s a gas main explosion that killed at least one and severely injured three, according to Philadelphia Gas Works. The video says it all. source

Politics: Should Obama turn health-care debate back on Republicans?

  • If the president said, ‘Okay, John Boehner, you bet, now that you’re in power, as soon as you pass a version that covers the same number of people for less, I’ll be happy to put my approach aside and cut a deal,’ he’d remind Americans about the discussion Republicans refuse to have.
  • Washington Post opinion writer Matt Miller • Arguing that Obama should frame the debate around health care not in terms of what the Republicans are claiming to do (save money), but in terms of what they as of yet have been unwilling to do – find a comprehensive approach to insuring 30 million Americans that saves more money than Obama’s plan, which he says is imperfect but still important. “Back in the universe in which we actually live, Obamacare was a historic first step. We need to mend it, not end it.” What do you guys think? source
