Biz: New jobless claims back down to pre-financial-crisis numbers

  • 388,000 the number of new jobless claims last week (the week of Christmas), the lowest it’s been in ages
  • 07/12/08 the last time new jobless claims dipped below 400,000 in a week – in the midst of the housing crisis source
  • » Is this a corner turned? It’s important to note that while weekly jobless claims figures aren’t exactly the end-all-be-all of unemployment statistics, the number has been headed in downward direction for weeks and is nearly 250,000 less than its peak in March 2009. While the numbers are seasonally adjusted, the Christmas holiday can have an effect on them, so it’s good to keep an eye on this number to see where it goes after the first of the year.

U.S.: Rage against snow not really new thing with New Yorkers

  • 1969 Former mayor John V. Lindsay faced the kind of rage about a blizzard that Michael Bloomberg is currently facing.
  • 1996 Brooklyn borough president Howard Golden, accused the sanitation department of simply ignoring Brooklynites.
  • 2000 Rudy Guliani scored points against the Port Authority by ripping their inability to get the airports up to speed again.
  • 2001 Weatherman felt the rage of New Yorkers after a massive blizzard didn’t actually produce the pain promised. source

Offbeat: NY Post criticizes NYC for “snow slowdow.” Without the “n.”

  • Dear New York Post: We know it may be hard to edit your graphics and stuff, but come on, it’s big type on your main headline. “Slowdow”? Really? And what’s with the one “t” in Paterson? Who cares if that’s his name? His parents and the rest of his family tree spelled it wrong! (thanks to the awesome hman on Tumblr for this one) source

World: Number of former Israeli presidents convicted of rape? One.

It’s good to note that Moshe Katsav, who was convicted of raping two former employees and harassing another, backed out of a plea deal to fight this in court. Bad idea. source

Offbeat: Protip: Don’t use gun when acting out sexual fantasies, guys

  • stupid Arthur Sedille, 23, liked to play a sexual fantasy game with his wife (Rebecca Sedille, 50) that involved putting a gun to her head. Yes, this sounds misguided, guys.
  • idiotic One day, the gun went off, and that was that. Now our boy Arthur Sedille could face murder charges for perhaps the worst idea in the history of ever. source

U.S.: Michael Bloomberg: Sorry about NYC’s crappy 911 service, guys

  • My heart really does go out to those who experienced trauma and tragedy during the storm. We take our emergency life-saving responsibilities very seriously and I’m extremely dissatisfied with the way our emergency-response systems performed.
  • New York mayor Michael Bloomberg • Expressing remorse about the crappy 911 service in NYC over the last couple of days due to the snow, which is leaving quite the mark on his reign. Multiple people died due to lacking and downright unavailable service, and over 1,700 911 calls went unanswered on Monday night and were stuck in a massive backlog. But the call volume itself was something else on Monday – 49,400 calls, the sixth-highest volume the emergency line has received in New York history. What happened, Mikey? source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell: The Establishment set me up! Seriously!

  • I have faith that our supporters and the general public will see right through these thug tactics. This is simply an Establishment trick to stop the anti-establishment Tea Party movement in its tracks.
  • Christine O’Donnell • Regarding reports that the FBI is investigating her for election fraud. Protip: Have a second career besides being a candidate so you can ensure that you aren’t spending campaign donations on rent and other expenses. It’s wasteful, Christine. We like Wonkette’s take on the matter: “Isn’t it strange how a person who has earned no income over the past half-decade and yet is not living on the streets could be charged with any kind of financial fraud? Same old lamestream FBI bullshit.” True ’nuff. source
