Culture: Loser AND winner in ultra-dark “Yogi Bear” parody case? Warner Bros.

  • Credit where credit’s due: Warner Bros. could’ve totally ripped apart Edmund Earle for creating this spot-on (and very dark) parody of the much-derided “Yogi Bear” film that’s coming out this week. But instead, the company’s letting Earle keep it up. There might be some back-end benefit for the Warners, anyway – the parody (which looks like the “Yogi Bear” film, almost too closely) riffs on “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.” That film, an Oscar-nominated flick from 2007, only made back half of its budget, so it could stand to benefit from the fresh notoriety. And guess who distributed that flick? That’s right. Warner Bros. source

Tech: The WSJ did a breakdown of the most-used Gawker passwords

Dear morons: Don’t give your account the password of “123456,” “password,” “12345678,” or name it after the site you’re visiting. It’s just a bad idea. source

U.S.: Police shoot, kill drunk guy holding pistol-shaped water nozzle

  • See this thing up here? That’s right. Water nozzle. Too bad police in Long Beach, Calif. didn’t notice that the drunk guy holding it wasn’t actually holding a gun. Unfortunately, he pointed it at the officers, who then shot him. Now, Douglas Zerby, who was waiting for his friend to pick him up on a street corner, is dead. His older sister, Eden Marie Biele, while being justifiably outraged, offered this thought of the day: “We’re outraged. You can’t get drunk in the city of Long Beach and not get shot? You’re trying to do the responsible thing and not drive and you get shot? Is that standard protocol? They didn’t wait for backup, they just shot him.” source

Politics: Ron Paul finally getting some respect in Congress, guys

And the best part for the libertarians out there? He didn’t come to the majority; the majority slowly came to him. He has a subcommittee chair to show for it. source

U.S.: A bunch of news happened today; here’s our lame catchup attempt

  • first A Virginia judge ruled that a key provision of the health-care bill – forcing people to get insured – was unconstitutional. Great news for America.
  • then The Senate voted to allow the great Obama tax compromise of 2010, to reach a final vote. It was a very easy vote, too – 83 yes, 15 no.
  • now Richard Holbrooke, a top diplomat for numerous presidents (including Obama), just died after he tore his aorta a few days ago. Sad.

Culture: Ford Field: People line up en masse for free Vikings/Giants tickets

  • Why are these guys so happy? They lined up in the bitter cold at Ford Field in Detroit this morning to score neutral-site tickets to the Minnesota Vikings/New York Giants game hastily scheduled there tonight, in the wake of that whole Metrodome collapse thang. Brett Favre may or may not be playing tonight; if he doesn’t, an epic consecutive-games streak goes away. source

World: Unceremonious firing of the day: Iran’s foreign minister gets ditched

  • So let’s say you’re going to get fired today. There are many ways your bosses could do it, from pink slips to boardroom hatchet jobs. But none of them might be as bad as what happened to Manouchehr Mottaki today. See, Mottaki, Iran’s foreign minister, was in FREAKING SENEGAL doing his job when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad decided to drop the axe. And while Ahmadinejad has wanted to do this for a while, he hasn’t been able to thanks to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. Yo, Mahmoud: At least bring him home first before you do the deed. You ain’t no George Clooney, and this ain’t no “Up In The Air.” source

Tech: Great. Gawker’s leak may have led to large-scale Twitter attack

  • bad Gawker’s data – tons of it, from images to user passwords to database files to worse – was uploaded by a couple of axe-grinding bad eggs on Bittorrent last night. Great. Thanks, jerks!
  • worse It appears that someone may have taken the passwords from the torrent and used them to turn Twitter accounts into Acai Berry-pitching spambots. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS, STAT. source
