U.S.: Good Samaritan validates reason for Amber Alert’s existence

  • The second time I reached him, the way he acted – yes, I was, for a split second I was nervous until I saw the little girl and all fear was out the window after that. I didn’t have no fear. I wasn’t thinking of me no more. I was just thinking we need to get that little girl to safety.
  • Fresno, Calif. resident Victor Perez • On singlehandedly stopping a known gang member (who was already on felony probation) from kidnapping a young girl. The Amber Alert for Elisa Cardenas, 8, was very close to Perez’s home, and when he saw Gregorio Gonzales driving by in his truck, Perez had his cousin call 911 – and he drove after Gonzales. The fact that Perez managed to stop Gonzales from kidnapping Cardenas verifies the reason the Amber Alert system exists. Great job, Victor. You saved the day. (Gonzales was caught a few hours later by police, by the way, but he let go of Cardenas after Perez stopped him.) source

Tech: Google TV’s new remote control a multi-button monstrosity

  • Would you use this thing to control your television? We’re not sure either. It looks like an epically confusing controller along the lines of the Atari Jaguar‘s epic 17-button monstrosity. But a recent Nightline report on Google TV briefly revealed this thing to the world. Wow, that’s a lot of buttons, isn’t it? source

Politics: Bob Woodward’s Obama/Clinton 2012 talk perks up some ears

  • Perhaps they should’ve done this back in 2008. Nothing against Biden – he’s not a bad VP even with his occasional gaffes – but it might have made it easier on the White House. See, if Hillary were VP, it’d be much harder for critics to pin all of the country’s weaknesses on Obama. Hillary Clinton should also run in 2016 no matter what happens, because she’ll probably win. Even with the frustrations some have with the Obama administration, one person who’s come out ahead is Clinton. She still looks good. source

Politics: Howard Kurtz impressed he was the center of attention for an hour

  • Within a few hours of Tuesdays announcement, a Politico reporter told me she was working on a second-day story. And by late afternoon, media columnists were already drawing up lists of who might replace me at The Post. I was old news, just like that.
  • Howard “quitting after 29 years” Kurtz • In his “I’m leaving” announcement on his Washington Post blog this morning. Kurtz was in disbelief that his departure actually led to his name briefly becoming a trending topic on Twitter yesterday “without even popping off, Rick Sanchez-style.” He claimed that he was departing because he found the ability to help mold the new-media landscape “irresistible.” We’ll see what the dude can do with The Daily Beast’s Washington bureau. It might be cool. source
