World: Hillary Clinton: Not many friends among Palestinians right now

  • The Secretary of State and former first lady praised Israel for making “unprecedented” concessions on disputed settlements in the West Bank. source
  • This comment was unexpected, and the Palestinians completely disagree. Most critically, they accuse her of “back-pedaling.” Ouch. source

Biz, Tech: Nintendo needs to do a lot to save its hide quickly

  • We sensed that the market mood was cooling off in the spring. But frankly, we hadn’t expected to get as bad as it did by summer.
  • Nintendo President Satoru Iwata • Describing the quick decline in sales of the Nintendo Wii this year. Despite the company’s cut in price on the Wii, it kind of made things worse this quarter: Profits dipped 52%, while sales slid 28%. Nintendo’s working hard to make some changes to help improve profits – new Mario and Zelda games are coming soon, and the company could make changes to the platform to enable (on the Wii’s end) Blu-Ray discs and (on the DS’ end) 3G and social networking. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. • source

Politics: What everyone missed with Dede Scozzafava: NY Republicans suck

  • Politico makes a good point on the matter. The quick wilting of Dede Scozzafava in a New York house race may be less a statement on Scozzafava herself and more on the New York Republican Party itself. “In just a few short years,” Politico argues, “the party’s presence in state politics has dwindled to the point of extinction-or irrelevance.” The party has no statewide elected officials and few members of the state legislature. All this is despite the fact that they’re running against a Democratic party loaded with political scandals such as Eilot Spitzer and unpopular leaders such as David Paterson. Yet things like this gum them up. source

World: What does Abdullah’s election pullout mean for Hamid Karzai?

  • Dr. Abdullah could make a lot of problems for him, because, firstly, they could refuse to recognize his legitimacy and also they could refuse to recognize his authority.
  • Afghanistan Centre for Research and Policy Studies head Haroun Mir • Describing what Hamid Karzai faces as a result of the election crisis created by Abdullah Abdullah’s departure from the process. The runoff will likely still take place – ballots with both men’s names have already been printed – but Abdullah’s refusal to take part means that if Karzai wins, it’s not going to be seen as legitimate. Beyond the bombings, the Taliban, the U.S. military presence, the dwindling poppy seed crop and the death tolls, it also sucks to be in Afghanistan for political reasons right now. • source

World: A “transparent election is not possible”: Karzai’s competition out

Afghanistan’s presidential election falls further into chaos after Abdullah Abdullah pulled out of a runoff for oversight reasons. Your move, Karzai. source
