U.S.: Protip: Don’t take insane murderers to the county fair

  • Phillip Paul escaped from a fair, then was recaptured. The Washington state prison inmate was arrested – again – on Sunday afternoon. Paul had been plotting his escape for months, knowing that he would be taken on a field trip to the Spokane County Fair. He escaped Thursday. Paul also escaped in 1991 and hurt a police officer during his recapture. That guy helped recapture Paul this time too. So, big question: Why are we taking prisoners to the county fair? U.S.: Which of these upcoming Obama appearances is most important?

  • Making Joe look good First stop for the president will be in upstate New York, where he’s going to make a speech at the community college where Joe Biden’s lovely wife, Jill, just happens to work. Don’t get Joe in the doghouse, man. He’s counting on you not to screw this up. source

  • Look good for Letterman Later today, the president will show up on David Letterman’s couch, becoming the first sitting president to do so. Letterman has more clout than you’d think; McCain hurt his campaign dearly when he skipped out on a Letterman appearance. So he best not screw this up. source

  • Looking good at the U.N. Then on Wednesday, the president will speak in front of the United Nations assembly and make an appearance at the G-20 summit, which is being held in Pittsburgh for some reason. Obama’s got a busy week ahead of him; he best not screw this up. source

U.S.: Afghanistan: Obama wants to cut back. A top general says, “Don’t.”

  • Failure to gain the initiative and reverse insurgent momentum in the near term (next 12 months) — while Afghan security capacity matures — risks an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible.
