Tech: So … there was some truth to the Twitpocalypse.

  • Three major Twitter apps were affected. But it’s not catastrophic. Use TweetDeck, Twitterrific for the iPhone or Destroy Twitter? Notice some weird problems? Blame the Twitpocalypse. In Twitterrific’s case, the company says: “Twitterrific 2.0.1 for the iPhone is indeed experiencing problems with the Twitpocalypse.” Sigh. We were hoping it was some lame fad. Oh wait, it is. The apps just need bugfixes. source

Politics, World: U.S.: We want diplomacy with Iran, no matter who wins

  • The president’s decision to engage Iran was not based on a particular electoral result. We are going to engage the Iranian government whether it is led by one faction or the other.
  • A senior State Department official • Regarding what’s next for the U.S. and Iran after the presidential election. As you might have heard, Obama wants an olive branch with a country that the U.S. has historically not been very friendly with. That won’t change, no matter who wins. • source

World: Strangely enough, Mousavi also sez he won Iran’s election

  • What the heck is going on, guys? Iran’s election results are nothing if a little confusing. Despite there being a massive turnout which suggested Mir Hossein Mousavi handily won, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad apparently got most of the votes. Unless he didn’t. Mousavi claims there were major irregularities and that he’s “definitely the winner” based on “all indications from all over Iran.” Hm. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Well. That’s something. source

Music: The kings of mopey strummer music create their own supergroup

  • The quartet, which calls itself Monsters of Folk, will release its self-titled debut September 22. Usually we’re against supergroups, but these guys have way more pedigree than Tinted Windows. (But fewer hit singles.) source
  • Because, seriously, who can dispute the awesomeness of an indie rock supergroup that actually calls itself Monsters of Folk? It’s like the Justice League, except it’s gonna put you to sleep and make you a little sad. source

Sports: Latest byproduct of GM’s bankruptcy: Cuts to NASCAR racing

  • They’re not going away completely, but they are cutting back. One of the most obvious public exponents of General Motors may be its role in the hugely popular NASCAR. GM, largely represented by Chevy, will take a step back, cutting funds from some big stars’ teams (Dale Jr. and Kevin Harvick) and overall doing less. NASCAR’s already been hit hard by the global crisis, with many job losses in the last year. This is just another chink in the Armor-All. source

Biz, U.S.: Hudson crash survivors had insurance from … AIG. Oh God.

  • I wish I had a hammer to get them to do the right thing. They’re riding a wave of feel-good opinion about how well the flight crew handled the bird strike.
  • Andrew J. Maloney • A partner the Kreindler & Kreindler law firm, on AIG’s bailing out of insurance claims for victims of US Airways Flight 1549, which Capt. Sully saved by landing in the Hudson River in New York, sure, but which meant some very tangible losses of stuff for passengers, along with injuries. And knowing that the public opinion is that everyone got off the plane unscathed, they’re taking advantage of this to not pay for damages. Jerks. • source
