World: Mumbai is on high alert, explosions may be terrorism

  • The entire city of Mumbai has been placed on high alert. I would appeal to the people of Mumbai to remain calm and maintain the peace.
  • Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram • Talking about the state of Mumbai after three explosions rocked the city. Chidambaram is saying this is an act of terrorism, but it’s unclear if that’s really the case – no organization has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack. It’s also unclear how many have been killed/wounded from the explosions — CNN is reporting over 20 dead and hundreds injured, while the LA Times says only 13 are dead and dozens more – we’ll continue to keep an eye on this for you. source

  • » Why would they do such a thing? This attack, one of the more disturbing we’ve heard in a while, is shocking, but not an unheard-of tactic by insurgents looking to covering their tracks — and possibly because they’re desperate. Only the girl died, by the way.

U.S.: Pentagon bomb-scare suspect tied to building shootings

  • Remember those mysterious building shootings near DC a while back? Remember that Marine reservist who got arrested at Arlington National Cemetery last week with some possibly-for-bomb-making fertilizer on his back? Probably the same guy. At least that’s what authorities say about Yonathan Melaku, whom they charged with both crimes earlier today. The FBI says they found a video of him firing at what looks like the Marine Corps Museum in his apartment, along with some bomb-making materials and a list of other things he needed. It’s a good thing they caught this guy when they did, because he may have been a “lone wolf” seriously looking to do some damage. source

U.S.: Pentagon scare: Marine reservist claimed he had explosives

  • claim Someone left a car near the Pentagon early this morning, and authorities thought that it might have a bomb in it. When the owner, a lance corporal in the Marines, was found at the then-closed Arlington National Cemetery and questioned, he claimed that he had explosive material on him.
  • truth Yonathan Melaku, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ethiopia, carried an unknown quantity of ammonium nitrate, a non-explosive chemical fertilizer often used in explosives, in his possession. While nothing was in his car, he possessed a notebook with al-Qaeda-related notes in it — scary stuff. source

  • relief? Ayman al-Zawahiri’s rise to the top spot in the al-Qaeda organization bears some positive realities for the United States. Namely, he is nowhere near as charismatic or effective a leader as Osama bin Laden was.

World: U.S. embassy bombing suspect Fazul Abdullah Mohammed killed

  • There was reportedly a $5 million bounty on his head. Mohammed, the main suspect in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings which killed more than 220 and injured over 5,000, was reportedly killed in Somalia on Wednesday. “We have received that communication from authorities in Somalia. We have been told that there were two terrorists who were killed in Somalia on Wednesday last week,” said Kenyan Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirmed the death, saying it was a “just end for a terrorist who brought so much death and pain to so many innocents.” The 38-year-old was reportedly in charge of al-Qaeda’s operations for the entirety of East Africa, so this was kind of a big one. Actually, you know what? This year has been full of huge losses for al-Qaeda. source

World: Will the U.S. destroy its stockpile of the smallpox virus?

  • » Smallpox keeps on kicking: Presently the U.S. has 451 samples of the smallpox virus, under the care of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), while Russia has just 120 in storage in a town somewhere in Siberia. Some would like to see these samples destroyed outright, in a bid to eradicate the virus from the world altogether. Dr. Donald Henderson, for one, who helped with in eradication efforts throughout the 70s, argues in favor of destroying the samples, but Kathleen Sibelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services, disagrees, saying that destroying the samples would be a “symbolic” act that would make it harder to vaccinate a population in the event of a terrorist attack utilizing the highly lethal virus.

World: Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s new top dog

  • Meet the new boss, not like the old boss: Ayman al-Zawahiri is now broadly considered to be al-Qaeda’s new top man. The 59-year-old has been within the organization for years, working as a strategist from the days of the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole until today — in recent years he’d been more vocal, through audio and video releases, than even the vastly more popular Osama bin Laden. His ascension is generally viewed as good news for the opponents of al-Qaeda; Zawahiri is Egyptian, which is a distinct area of racial tension within al-Qaeda, and while he’s a successful strategist, most consider him utterly lacking in the charisma or leadership ability that made bin Laden such a dangerous figure. source
