Politics: Gingrich’s campaign suffers high-level staffer exodus

  • A bad day for big Newt: Want to know what can’t fill your heart with confidence heading into a Presidential primary? When your press secretary tells the AP he’s resigning, and your campaign manager, along with a spate of aides throughout Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina follow suit. Gingrich has said that he will continue to run, undeterred by this “rats fleeing the sinking ship” sort of moment. As it happens, Gingrich wasn’t even in the country a few days ago — he’s on vacation with his wife near the Greek Isles (which, in the midst of a campaign in such crisis, doesn’t make him seem that serious about all this). source

Politics: Gabrielle Giffords watches husband’s launch, sees staffers

  • It was emotional to see the congresswoman for the first time in four months but it was also very inspirational. To actually see her and talk with her, it was a very moving experience.
  • Mark Kimble, communications staffer for Gabrielle Giffords • Speaking about seeing Giffords for the first time since the January shooting that nearly killed her. Giffords was staying at a hotel in Florida so she could watch her husband, Mark Kelly, launch in the shuttle Endeavor at the Kennedy Space Center. While there, she was able to meet with some of her staff that she hadn’t seen since the fateful day, likely an intensely emotional reunion for all involved. That she made the trip is testimony both to the amazing care and rehabilitation she’s received, as well as the incredible and improbable success she’s had in recovery. source

Culture: Robert Joel Halderman: A news chaser being chased himself

  • Colleagues are shocked by his arrest in the Letterman case. Halderman, a producer of “48 Hours,” covered wars and school shootings with a high level of get-the-story passion. But now that he’s on the other end, colleagues are shocked. Marcy McGinnis, a former boss of his at CBS, described “Joe” as a newshound who would do anything to get the story. “I said to my mother that this was like her waking up to find out I’d been arrested for this,” she noted. Halderman’s lawyer, Gerald L. Shargel, said that co-workers of his posted his bond, and that he was trying to “level the playing field” for his client. source

Culture: David Letterman is still feeling the effects from the sex scandal

  • I’ll be honest with you folks. Right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail. I get in the car this morning and the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me. Ouch.
  • David Letterman • Speaking out on Monday’s show in response to his admission on Thursday that he slept with staffers. He initially didn’t want to bring it up again, but it’s still heavy on the news cycle. So he’s talking about it again. Perhaps the most painful thing thing about the controversy might be dealing with his wife Regina, who he didn’t mention in Thursday’s monologue at all: “”She has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it.” Dude’s got a crappy next few months ahead of him. • source
