World: Russian parliamentary election protests continue despite pressure

  • » Russian opposition protests come out in numbers: Roughly a week after the Russian elections proved to have questionable results, people are still showing their frustrations with Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party with protests. “People are just tired, they have already crossed all the boundaries,” noted one protester, Yana Larionova. “You see all these people who are well dressed and earn a good salary, going out onto the streets on Saturday and saying, ‘No more.’ That’s when you know you need a change.” Protesters came out in such strong numbers that authorities were worried that the footbridge under them would collapse. Meanwhile, the Russian government continues to discourage the protests — including painting the protesters as similar to those in Libya and blaming the United States for the protests.

World: Hillary Clinton, Vladimir Putin have war of words over Russian elections

World: Clinton supports electoral fraud investigation in Russian elections

  • Russian voters deserve a full investigation of all credible reports of electoral fraud and manipulation and we hope in particular that then Russian authorities will take action.

The party, in what was seen as a referendum on Putin, lost 77 seats and its pivotal two-thirds majority. “The Russian people, like people everywhere, deserve the right to have their voices heard and their votes counted,” Clinton noted. “That means they deserve free, fair, transparent elections and leaders who are accountable to them.” source

The mission intended to answer the question: ” can people stay healthy and sane during six months rocketing to the Red Planet?” The participants, from countries like Europe, Russia and China, are expected to have problems adjusting to the “noise and activity of ordinary life.” Still, it seemed to go much better than this experiment in 2000, which ended “in drunken disaster when two participants got into a fistfight and a third tried to forcibly kiss a female crew member.” We would be a little frazzled, too, after hundreds of days of isolation and terrible food. source

World: In Soviet Russia, CNN competes with … uh, itself. Kinda.

  • A Russian fan went above and beyond, it seems. It seems like someone has taken the liberty to set up a CNN site for Russia — but the site is not officially associated with CNN in any way. In fact, the stories are just run through an online translator, so they often translate horribly. One story referenced the head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn as the head of a penis, not an organization. No one knows who’s running this thing, but a note on the website says that it only republishes parts of stories from CNN.com and links back to them. To do this, the site uses Joomla, a CMS system like similar to WordPress. A spokeswoman from CNN said that they’re “evaluating the next steps.” Hopefully they can get to the, er…head of the problem. World: Iran’s long-gestating Bushehr nuclear plant delayed AGAIN
