Politics: Pentagon inquiry clears McChrystal over Rolling Stone article

  • Rolling Stone vs. the Pentagon: A Pentagon inquiry into the Rolling Stone article “The Runaway General,” which was written by Michael Hastings and basically got Stanley McChrystal fired, has by their claims vindicated the former General. They said they were unable to verify the accuracy of the events detailed, and that in many areas they could find no witnesses to corroborate the claims. Hastings and his editors aren’t having it, however; they stand behind the accuracy of the piece, making this something of a murky, “my word versus yours” scenario. Said Rolling Stone Executive Editor Eric Bates: “It’s accurate in every detail.” source

Music: Rolling Stone has John Lennon’s last print interview – in audio form

  • Earlier this year I was cleaning up to find some files in the recesses of my closet when I came across two cassette tapes marked ‘John Lennon, December 5th, 1980.’ It had been 30 years since I listened to them, and when I put them on this totally alive, uplifting voice started speaking on this magical strip of magnetic tape.
  • Rolling Stone writer Jonathan Cott • On rediscovering the audio tapes made from the interview he did with John Lennon – the last print interview he did before his death, one which was never fully transcribed as a result. Considering today is the 30th anniversary of the iconic Beatle’s murder, it only makes sense that Rolling Stone would pull it out today. Still though, it’s a pretty cool document of rock history. source

  • He’s in the midst of meeting with Obama this morning. Will he lose his position? Well, Obama wants a list of replacements. We’re guessing it’ll be people who aren’t loyal to McChrystal. It does not look good for the dude. The Pentagon would prefer that he be reprimanded but allowed to continue. Obama and McChrystal are meeting now.   • I think it’s clear that the article in which he and his team appeared showed poor judgment, but I also want to make sure that I talk to him directly before I make that final decision.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking today about the fate of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, his main man in Afghanistan, who was savaged in this wonderful Rolling Stone article which was so effective that it might force the general to resign. While some argue that the structure is working against him, those same people say his reaction to that structure is still enough to force his resignation. Showing disloyalty to the president is a fireable offense in the world of Stanley McChrystal. Somehow this story managed to get the oil spill out of the news for the day, despite there being oil spill news today. How the hell did that happen? source

Politics: USA Today makes a pretty stupid criticism of Rolling Stone

  • Look, no matter your opinion of the mag, they’ve never strictly been a music mag. So why is USA Today launching into this criticism of the magazine in regards to the Stanley McChrystal article? Here’s what they said: “One of the odd things about this story: What’s it doing in Rolling Stone, a magazine devoted largely to music?” Maybe you haven’t read the magazine in 30 years, but their political coverage is spot-on. They have a pretty amazing political cud-chewer in the form of Matt Taibbi. And the features are usually awesome. Criticizing Rolling Stone for coverage they’ve always had is tantamount to ignorance. Now, their music coverage, on the other hand … that’s gone downhill. (Disclosure: We got bit by the journalism bug reading long features in Rolling Stone. Somehow we ended up here.) source

  • It was a 10-minute photo-op. Obama clearly didn’t know anything about him, who he was. Here’s the guy who’s going to run his f-ing war, but he didn’t seem very engaged. The Boss was pretty disappointed.
  • An adviser to Gen. Stanley McChrystal • Quoted in the Rolling Stone article, which, stupidly, Rolling Stone isn’t milking on their Web site this morning. Instead, we have to go to CNN for excerpts, including one where he and his staff imagine dismissing Vice President Joe Biden with this one-liner: “Did you say ‘bite me’?” If dude doesn’t get fired over this, it’s gonna be a sad day. source
