U.S.: Alright … who hollowed out Detroit and took all its people?

  • 713k Detroit’s current population, according to the census figures released today
  • 951k Detroit’s population back in 2000 — all told, that’s about a 25 percent drop in just a decade
  • half of all counties in Michigan have shrunk — it’s the only state to lose population source
  • » Dave Bing, not so happy: The mayor of Detroit (who played a mean game of hoops in his day and created an unintentional Robocop campaign) says that the Census totally under-counted his villa. He says the town has 750,000 people at least. While there were areas with big jumps throughout Michigan, they were mostly in suburbs (Lansing = where it’s at). Da Yoopers had some pretty huge declines of their own — one county lost 13 percent of its population.

U.S.: Census: Post-Katrina New Orleans shrinks by a third

  • 484,674 New Orleans’ population as of the 2000 census
  • 343,829 the city’s population in 2010, five years after Hurricane Katrina source

  • Democratic communities and constituencies have grown in size in states like Arizona, Florida, Nevada, and Washington. In states that will lose a seat, the number of Republicans who will be competing with each other creates opportunities for House Democrats.

But let’s face it – they’re going to be very challenging for Obama, and Democrats overall, to fight. The only real Democratic stronghold that gained any seats was Washington, and Obama banked his victory on many of the states that lost electoral college votes. The amount we’re talking about wouldn’t have been enough to hurt Obama’s in 2008, but if the 2012 race is closer, it could hurt. source

U.S.: Holy Crap: Detroit’s ready to bulldoze its vacant neighborhoods

  • Mayor Dave Bing ready to destroy parts of a city he’s an icon of. This map above shows all of the vacant neighborhoods in the city, which has declined in population by half (from 1.8 million to 900,000) since the ’60s. The green areas? They’re at least half vacant (and blighted). You can see the problem already – all the vacated areas are deep within the city, while the populated areas are in the outskirts. That complicates urban planning. source

World: Shanghai officials not so keen on that whole one child policy anymore

  • one the number of kids Chinese couples are allowed to have. There are some exceptions, of course. If you and your spouse are both only children and live in the city, or if you live in the country and your first child is a girl, two is perfectly alright.
