U.S.: From activism to murder charges: Kermit Gosnell’s long decline

  • respected Physician Kermit Gosnell, an early abortion practicioner, went to the Mantua neighborhood of Philadelphia in the late ’60s as an activist trying to change the rough-and-tumble neighborhood. He helped open both an abortion clinic and a methadone clinic.
  • reckless Over the years, Gosnell became known for taking risks that most abortion doctors wouldn’t – a trend that led to a declining reputation, and eventually, his recent arrest on really disturbing charges. He didn’t even have a nurse for most of the time he ran the clinic! source

U.S.: This Philly abortion clinic story makes us freaking sick

  • 45 fetuses were just hanging around the Philadelphia clinic (ugh)
  • nine clinic workers were charged along with Dr. Kermit Gosnell
  • one patient reportedly died in Gosnell’s utterly disgusting care source
  • » Breaking the rules, and then some: The clinic was performing illegal late-term abortions en masse, some as late as eight months in. He would induce birth and then … ugh, we don’t even want to talk about it. The fetuses were aborted so late in pregnancy that Gosnell, whose clinic was a mess, will be charged with murder for the fetuses along with the mother who died. No matter where you fall on the abortion debate, we can probably all agree that this is not how they should be done – with bent and gruesomely ignored rules all over the place. *shudder*

U.S.: The craziest gas-main-explosion video we’ll post today

  • It’s sometimes scary in Philadelphia. This clip is not the climatic scene from an awesome ’80s action flick. No, it’s a gas main explosion that killed at least one and severely injured three, according to Philadelphia Gas Works. The video says it all. source

U.S.: In Philly, running a blog that makes no money will cost you $300

  • The real kick in the pants is that I don’t even have a full-time job, so for the city to tell me to pony up $300 for a business privilege license, pay wage tax, business privilege tax, net profits tax on a handful of money is outrageous.
  • Marilyn Bess • Regarding the letter she got from the city of Philadelphia, informing her that she had to pay for a business privilege license for her blog, which has only made $50 over a three-year period, largely off of eHow articles. Also, she’s on a WordPress.com blog, which does not allow advertising unless you hit a certain traffic threshold. There are free-speech ramifications here, and it sounds like a shakedown to us. A bureaucrat needs to be taken out back and shot. Possibly two or three. source

U.S.: Bad sign: Murder is up in many major cities this year

  • 149 murders in New York City so far this year, versus 134 at the same point last year; 13 were kids
  • 120 murders in Chicago
(111 last year); a major leap in murder last month was a root cause
  • 104 murders in Philadelphia (101 last year); crime is mostly down in Philly this year
  • 103 murders in Los Angeles (100 last year); violent crime is otherwise down this year source

U.S.: Final totals: How much snow did D.C., Baltimore and Philly get?

  • 17.8″ snowfall total at Reagan National Airport, just outside of D.C. – the airport’s second-highest-ever total
  • 24.8″ snowfall total at Baltimore Washington International Airport, its highest total ever in a two-day span
  • 28.5″ snowfall total in Philadelphia, the second-highest total ever in the region; start shoveling source
  • Is more coming? Because Mother Nature hates us personally and wants ShortFormBlog to apparently shut down, she plans on bringing more snow to the Mid-Atlantic region later this week. This time it’s only reportedly going to be six inches, but come on, what did we do to you, Mom?

U.S.: Snooty pool club accused of racism falling victim to bankruptcy

  • While many will point towards our legal situation and negative media exposure this summer as the reason [we’re going bankrupt], the truth is that the club has struggled to stay out of the red for at least the last decade.
  • Valley Club president John Duesler • Attempting to explain that his suburban Philly pool club’s fall into bankruptcy had nothing to do with the barrage of negative press they got for blocking minority children from swimming in their pool. The club is in debt over $100,000 this year alone – mostly from expenses and legal fees. Oh, and a lot of pretty awful press comparing them to Jim Crow probably doesn’t help either. • source
