Jesus – in the first round? Obama’s rep as kingmaker didn’t do a thing to get the Olympics into Chicago. Not only did Chicago lose, they lost almost immediately, gaining the lowest total out of 94 votes cast. Here’s one Chicagoan’s take: “The violence in the schools became an international issue, and all the corruption, the rest of the world just sees us as Crook Town,” said Luciano Reyes, who may, unfortunately, have a point. source
I’ve come here today to urge you to choose Chicago for the same reason I chose Chicago nearly twenty-five years ago, the reason I fell in love with the city I still call home.
President Barack Obama • Making a pitch to the International Olympic Committee to bring the 2016 games to his hometown. He also uses his wife to push them, too: “It’s not only because it’s where I met the woman you just heard from, though after getting to know her this week I’m sure you will all agree that she’s a pretty big selling point for the city.” The IOC is currently voting; it’s expected to go three rounds, with Chicago likely facing off against Rio de Janeiro. • source
We seriously hope that every president considers doing like the White House Flickr feed in the future. (In this pic, he’s talking to a bunch of advisers about Afghanistan. We will say this much: It’s telling that only one of them is female.) You feel like you’re really on the inside with these photos. And they make a great document for future generations. Isn’t it great that we have a president who gets social media?source
This is a very, very close race between four outstanding bids. Because the bids are so good and because it is so close the last few hours are going to be even more exciting than usual.
Sir Craig Reedie • A British International Olympic Committee representative, describing the competition between Chicago, which is slightly favored, and the three other bids: Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Chicago is a world-class city, but so are the other three. But Chicago has Obama coming in to rep, and everybody (not on the right) loooooooooooooooves Obama. They’ll name the winner on Friday. • source
Iran has a right to peaceful nuclear power that meets the energy needs of its people. But the size and the configuration of this facility is inconsistent with a peaceful program. Iran is breaking rules that all nations must follow.
President Barack Obama • Speaking at the G20 Conference in Pittsburgh on Iran’s nuclear program. In other words, the administration is OK with them having nuclear power, but they seem to be all geared up for nuclear weapons, and that’s not cool. • source
I get the sense, when you listen to what he’s actually saying, that he’s talking mostly about the ideological-leaning networks rather than CNN. He’s talking about the back and forth and sometimes one-sidedness that you might get on other cable channels.
An anonymous CNN executive • Discussing Obama’s recent criticism of the cable news cycle and how damaging it is for the political process. Now, we could be wrong about this, but, doesn’t CNN dwell on one issue for six hours just like MSNBC or Fox? If so, you guys are complicit in the crime. This Politico article does a good job breaking down the issue. • source
