Music: Gorillaz’ new single, “Stylo,” gets away with awesome again (!!)

  • cool The new Gorillaz single, “Stylo,” has one of the deepest, bassiest beats you’ll hear this side of a Justice song. If the music video doesn’t feature Don Johnson in shades, we’ll be greatly disappointed.
  • crazy The song features Bobby Womack – a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and legendary soul singer – using his booming vocals to break through everything. It’s an awesome left turn for a band built on them. source

Music: We have a new Michael Jackson song. It goes like this.

  • Is This It? Yes, this is it. “This is it” is the single Michael Jackson was supposed to ride off into the sunset of a second wind of a career. That didn’t happen. Instead. It’s a painfully ironic statement of a guy who died before he had a chance to live the song’s statement of optimism. How about the song itself? It’s pretty good. It’s got an old-school MJ feel. It’s not even pretending to be a song released in 2009 (which suggests to us it wasn’t recorded recently). What do you think? Post your thoughts, kids.source

Music: Weezer finally completes its conversion into The All-American Rejects

Pitchfork nudged us towards Weezer’s new single, “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To,” from their new album “Raditude.” It sucks. source

Culture, Music, Politics: Dear Eminem: The formula’s wearing very thin

  • We get it, man. Marshall, you’re one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and this is the make-or-break moment. Critics, who howled in disappointment at “Encore,” are wanting “Relapse” (out in May) to be a return to form. Fans are looking for the most notorious rapper of the last decade to start making hits again. But could you at least make it a little more surprising? source

  • The video Eminem is one of maybe four artists – Michael Jackson, Weird Al and Weezer being the other three – who nails the videos every time. “We Made You,” the first single from “Relapse,” is no exception. With pop-culture riffs all over the place, it manages to nail Jessica Simpson, “Star Trek” (see Dre as Capt. Kirk; LOL) and a host of other media icons with ease. source

  • However … … this is exactly the kind of song and exactly the kind of video that Eminem releases as a first single – and a decade in, and his aim’s getting a little off. Riffs on Bret Michaels and Portia di Rossi? Really? And we can see a few Republicans getting uppity over Sarah Palin’s trashing. Marshall, you need a new trick; this one’s just old and tired. source
