Music: Saturday mixtape: Considering musical activism, post-Obama

Activism needs a direction. As music fans, we've noticed a severe decline in politically-inclined tunes in recent months. Barack Obama's election drew huge support from the indie rock community, but with him in office, it's in need of a reboot. We have some thoughts, in mixtape form.
  • 1. Looking outward: A few years ago, Ted Leo pulled off a neat trick with “The Ballad of the Sin Eater,” turning in solid commentary of America’s place in the world during the height of the Bush era. With the Iranian election still fresh, it’s a line of thought in need of reevaluation.
    3. Questioning the spiritual: Fucked Up’s “The Chemistry Of Common Life ” was an amazing, vitriolic statement on spirituality, with “Twice Born” playing centerpiece. From Sufjan Stevens to The Thermals, religion plays a huge role on both sides of this debate.
    3. From the outside in: M.I.A.’s done more to bring radical politics to the mainstream than any other modern musician – especially the Sri Lanka conflict. Songs like “Sunshowers” excel at exposing audiences to political opinions outside of guy-with-a-guitar rhetoric.
    4. Indifference: Not having an opinion is still an opinion. Cass McCombs analyzes the nature of indifference with “Don’t Vote,” which plays like a modern “Okie from Muskogee.”
    5. Going conservative: If you look around the internet for the phrase “republican indie rock,” you’ll be surprised at how little shows up. Cold War Kids may be the best example of a well-known indie band whose lyrical politics lean towards conservatism. As Obama’s poll numbers decline, could we see more of this? source

Music, Politics: Ouch! This indie rock catfight seems destined to leave scars

  • He needs to go back to school or move back in with his parents and sit down and think about things. He shouldn’t play music. He shouldn’t tour.
  • Black Lips singer Jared Swilley • On fellow indie rocker Nathan Williams, a.k.a. Wavves. Wavves, who is currently earning much buzz for his noise-drenched indie rock, had a huge drug-fueled on-stage meltdown at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, Spain – his first European show. Swilley says he thought he was too cool and blew his opportunity. He also treats people bad and eats puppies. • source

Culture, Music: NBC’s Brian Williams apparently has a lot of indie cred

  • Watch how Brian Williams stumbles through this “BriTunes” interview with of-the-moment indie band Deer Tick. It’s really, really unconvincing, guys. source

Music: Random music recommendation: The Humms

  • We were disappointed tonight that we couldn’t get to see King Khan & The Shrines at the 9:30 Club (long story), but these Georgia dudes, on songs like “Are You Dead?”, mine the same fuzzy psychedelic territory in an engaging way.

Not bad guys. Come to D.C. You can sleep on our couch as long as you take turns sleeping on the couch, because we only have one. source

Music: This is like an indie kid’s dream tour … almost

  • one Dan Deacon: King of Wham City, Baltimore hipster freak, Casiotone supergenius, holding the Raymond Scott baton for a new generation of hipsters. Awesome.
  • two Deerhunter: Atlanta’s shoegazing innovators, creators of our favorite album of last year, complete with iconoclast lead singer Bradford Cox. Also pretty awesome.
  • three No Age: Pretty much the band responsible for bringing noise back to the forefront of indie rock. Leaders of the scene at L.A.’s Smell hipster dwelling. Overrated.
  • four The format: Round robin. All three bands set up at once. One band plays a song. The audience moves. Another band plays. The audience moves again. And so on. AWESOME! source

Music: ShortFormBlog’s Saturday mixtape: Five songs we recommend

  • one The L.A. band noise-rock HEALTH has managed to slowly expand its experimental roots into something palatable, as on stellar new single “Die Slow.”
  • two Jay Reatard stinks live – he doesn’t really have stage presence – but he has solid individual songs, such as “See Saw” from last year’s “Matador Singles ’08.”
  • three We really dig the noisy lo-fi electronica of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, especially when he covers Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia.”
  • four Rough-’round-the-edges Psych-folkie Rodriguez, a Detroit native, became big without knowing it in South Africa thanks to “Sugar Man” and his 1970 album “Cold Fact.”
  • five We’re big Dan Deacon fans here, and “Bromst” has yet to go off our musical radar. With songs like “Padding Ghost,” with its euphoric melodies, why would it?
