U.S.: Guns around the White House: One week, two incidents

  • Friday Two vehicles were spotted in the midst of a gunfight within a relatively close distance to the White House — within a few hundred yards of the building. An AK-47 was recovered.
  • Tuesday White House officials found a single bullet that had been fired at the White House itself, but was held off by ballistic glass. Officials don’t know if Friday’s incident was the cause for the find. source

U.S.: IHOP shooting: Carson City, Nevada in shock after deadly attack

  • three people dead after a man opened fire with a rifle in a Nevada IHOP on Tuesday morning
  • six people were wounded; the suspect, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, hasn’t been identified source
  • » What happened: Witnesses said the man arrived at a Carson City strip mall in a blue minivan, and shot a man on a motorcycle before entering the IHOP, wherein he shot and killed two National Guard members. The man then exited the restaurant and fired towards a few other businesses, apparently before shooting himself. Our thoughts and our hearts obviously go out to those affected by this horrible attack.

Politics: Arizona State Sen. Lori Klein points loaded gun at reporter

  • Whoever would do something like that needs to have a better grounding in gun safety before ever laying a hand on a firearm.
  • Rob Mermelstein, range master of the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club • Speaking on Arizona state senator Lori Klein, who during a conversation about carrying her gun in her purse while on the floor of the legislature, drew said gun and pointed it at a reporter’s chest to show off the laser sight. Her disclaimer? “I just didn’t have my hand on the trigger.” Mermelstein is absolutely right, and what he’s saying is the moral baseline for responsible gun ownership. We’ll take the advice of a former military man we knew — you never, ever aim a gun at somebody who you’re not prepared to kill. This is unsafe and reprehensible behavior, for which Klein will richly deserve any scrutiny she receives. The article also reports that her gun has no safety, which seems crazy — you’re going to carry a loaded, readied gun in your purse? Has Plaxico taught us nothing? source

U.S.: Only in America story of the day

  • I could best describe him as a bully. He’s one of those people you’re constantly dealing with — confrontations with law enforcement, confrontations with neighbors
  • Chuck Curry, the county sheriff in Flathead County, Montanna • He’s talking about a guy named David Burgert, someone formerly in charge of a militia that wants to go to war with the National Guard and overthrow the government. Apparently, Burgert got in a shootout with police and then ran into the woods. They’ve been looking for him since the shootout happened Sunday, and they’ve only found stashes of guns and food. Let’s hope this guy doesn’t end up overthrowing our government any time soon. We’re shaking in our boots. source

World: Syrian protests cleared out by live fire, teargas

  • The dangers of nightfall in Syria: A sit-in was held in Clock Square, in the city of Homs, but come nightfall the Assad government decided it was time to clear the square. The methods employed seem to be teargas and live gunfire. Be forewarned — while the video is a bit jumpy and hard to see clearly, it’s nonetheless very unpleasant and disturbing. source

U.S.: South Carolina wants to legalize handguns in day-care centers

  • concerning The state legislature in South Carolina is currently considering a law that would allow for guns to be carried in day-care centers, churches, and restaurants.
  • crazy The state’s pro-gun lobby oppose the bill for not going far enough, and has called the bill “unconstitutional” in its restrictions. source
  • » Restrictions? What restrictions? As explained in an open letter, the gun lobby objects on the grounds that the legislation doesn’t allow out-of-staters, or people under 21, to reap the benefits of the new law, thus violating their constitutional rights. Fun fact: South Carolina has the ninth-highest rate of murder-by-firearm in the country. Actually, on second though, there’s nothing fun about that.

Politics: He will not be swayed: NRA’s LaPierre snubs President Obama

  • suggestion President Obama penned an op-ed in the Arizona Daily Star last Sunday, calling for a look at “common sense” gun control. What he specifically endorses is mild; mostly, he emphasized better enforcement of existing law, and more efficient background checks.
  • rejection NRA leader Wayne LaPierre has refused even to talk to Obama. “Why should I or the NRA go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the Second Amendment in the United States?” A little soft-sold extremism, anyone? source

U.S.: Man takes loaded gun onto aircraft, TSA doesn’t notice

  • in theory, we like the tsa. Unpleasant as “enhanced” pat downs are, it’s a small price to pay for the assurance of safety. And if that were actually how things worked, we’d have no complaints. But as soon as someone is able to successfully take a loaded gun onto an aircraft, we have to call BS. Because at that point, why even have a TSA? What’s worse, this apparently happens all the time; ABC News reports that some airports have a failure rate of 70% (!). Granted, this time it was an accident. But what about when it’s not? It’s about time to seriously re-think airport security.  source

A major soccer match between Egypt and Algeria took place in Sudan today, and the Sudanese brought their guns and military presence. Sounds fun. source
