Biz: Colt 45 Blast: Endorsed by Snoop Dogg, not endorsed by Illinois

  • Meet the new Four Loko: Our friends at Pabst may not promote the heck out of PBR, at least obviously, but they are promoting this Colt 45 derivative really heavily, using Snoop Dogg to push Blast onto unsuspecting youths who missed out on Billy Dee WIlliams. The drink, which doesn’t have caffeine, does have 12 percent alcohol concentration — enough for Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to compare a single can to a six-pack of beer. It’s not Loko. It’s a Blast. source

Reports of sellouts of the drink far and wide have made it a hot commodity, one which may lead to lots of people actually taking this video seriously. source

Biz: Four Loko makers Phusion Products decaffeinate potent drink

  • All the bad press finally got to them. In a statement tonight, the drink makers, Phusion Projects, announced they’d be losing caffeine, guarana and taurine from the controversial “blackout-in-a-can” beverage. The company’s three co-founders explain it like so: “We are taking this step after trying – unsuccessfully – to navigate a difficult and politically-charged regulatory environment at both the state and federal levels.” They say they have readily worked with regulators to ensure that their product was legal. The steadfastly claim, however, “that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is safe. If it were unsafe, popular drinks like rum and colas or Irish coffees that have been consumed safely and responsibly for years would face the same scrutiny that our products have recently faced.” Either way, Four Loko is now One Loko – alcohol.  source

U.S.: Four Loko banned in Michigan: Get your blackouts somewhere else

  • “Blackout in a Can” is losing the PR battle. So, it appears that Four Loko is about to become persona non grata in convenience stores across Michigan, as the state has banned the drink altogether (along with 55 other alcohol-plus-energy-drink concoctions) in the wake of a sexual assault case involving Four Loko. “Until further research is done by the FDA, they should no longer be on Michigan shelves,” said Michigan Liquor Control Commission Chairwoman Nida Samona. U.S.: Four Loko: All of the bad parts of getting drunk, combined

  • One of these cans of Four Loko packs the punch of a six-pack of beer. Worse, the drinks also include five cups of coffee. Remember that story we posted a few weeks ago about the college party that went south and left a bunch of kids sick? They were drinking this. (Update: Our friend Steve Dorsey tipped us off to a sexual assault trial in a Detroit suburb that also involved Four Loko. And high school students. Use your heads, guys.
