Politics: Rick Scott pissing off everyone – in both parties – in the legislature

  • The governor doesn’t understand there is a State Constitution and that we have three branches of government. They are talking about the attitude that he is still the CEO of his former health care corporation, and that is not going to work in this state, in Tallahassee, in my district. The people believe in three branches of government.
  • Republican Florida State Senator Mike Fasano • Criticizing Tea Party-backed Gov. Rick Scott for pretty much acting LIKE A BOSS instead of a guy who has to answer to the legislative branch. He’s been making some pretty bold decisions – like, for example, selling state-owned jets because he had one of his own – without getting Congressional approval. “It’s necessary at this time, I think — because our governor’s new — to let him know this is not a monarchy,” said Democratic State Senator Arthenia L. Joyner. “He’s not a king. This is a democracy.” Joyner brought a lawsuit against Scott because he killed a plan for high-speed rail. Scott, who recently unveiled his budget plan hundreds of miles away from Tallahassee, shouldn’t get too cocky – the GOP has a supermajority in both houses and can override his veto easily. source

U.S., World: Dalai Lama’s nephew killed in unfortunate car accident

  • Yesterday, Jigme K. Norbu, the nephew of the Dalai Lama, started a 300-mile walk across Florida (with a large group of other people, by the way) to help raise awareness for the Tibetan Independence Movement. He didn’t get very far. Norbu was hit by a car less than 50 miles from his starting point, near the end of the first leg of the journey, off the coastal State Road A1A. A terrible, meaningless accident. source

Offbeat: Annoying kid: “I wanna be in Florida getting a tan on my back!”

  • We sense a meme coming on. The level of annoyance that 8-year-old Alexander Wright has about being forced to use his iPod while being stuck in the airport is epic. We want to let this kid to know that it gets better. You will get to Florida someday. (Thanks Adam Griffiths) source

U.S.: Ineffective gunman Clay Duke had an extra box of bullets on him

  • 11 number of bullets fired by Clay Duke at the Bay District School Board; none of them connected, even though he was point-blank
  • two number of bullets fired by security guard Mike Jones, who connected both times; Duke then killed himself after the incident
  • yes Duke had more bullets; he had an extra clip and an entire box of bullets; considering how bad of a shot he was, he needed them source
  • » Why did he snap?: Duke was apparently upset that his wife, a teacher, was fired by the school district, based in Panama City, Fla., earlier this year. Oh yeah, Duke asked a couple of ROTC members that he ran into if their weapons were loaded. Should’ve asked the security guard. That said, we’re very happy that the intended victims weren’t hurt by this guy. Whew.

U.S.: Worst gunman ever: Guy holds up meeting, opens fire, misses

  • Look. This was a scary incident. This guy, Clay Duke, could’ve hurt a lot of people. But … man. This video makes us wonder. He started firing, and managed to hit absolutely nobody. They initially thought he was firing blanks at the Panama City, Fla. school board members … but no. He’s just perhaps the worst gunman ever. (That giant, inexplicable “V” on the wall? Also Duke’s handiwork.) During the incident, a security guard shot at Duke, who later shot himself in the head and died. And we have the entire thing on video. Wanna know more? Well, a reporter on the scene wrote an entertaining, colorful eyewitness account. Worth the read. source

Biz: Debt collectors stalk people on Facebook, actively break law

  • Debt collectors have hit Facebook. Florida resident Melanie Beacham recently sued debt collection agency MarkOne Financial LLC for harassment. Apparently, they decided to not only bug her, but her friends and family on Facebook, all in an attempt to get $362 in car payments. We’re seriously thinking of sending this friend request just to see what this jerk does. Should we? We’ll leave it up to you guys. source
