U.S.: Which of these upcoming Obama appearances is most important?

  • Making Joe look good First stop for the president will be in upstate New York, where he’s going to make a speech at the community college where Joe Biden’s lovely wife, Jill, just happens to work. Don’t get Joe in the doghouse, man. He’s counting on you not to screw this up.
  • Look good for Letterman Later today, the president will show up on David Letterman’s couch, becoming the first sitting president to do so. Letterman has more clout than you’d think; McCain hurt his campaign dearly when he skipped out on a Letterman appearance. So he best not screw this up.
  • Looking good at the U.N.Then on Wednesday, the president will speak in front of the United Nations assembly and make an appearance at the G-20 summit, which is being held in Pittsburgh for some reason. Obama’s got a busy week ahead of him; he best not screw this up. source

Culture, Politics: David Letterman pisses off Sarah Palin, gets smacked down

  • Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.
  • David Letterman • In an apology about a series of jokes he made about Sarah Palin’s daughter, which Palin did not take kindly to. Palin said, regarding the jokes, “it reminds us some Hollywood/N.Y. entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands.” To those looking to defend Dave: Well, he did make sexual jokes about her 14-year-old daughter. • source

Culture: Conan’s making peace with that whole Jay-at-10 thing

  • I took some time before I went to my producer and said: ‘In this scenario I’m still hosting that show that Johnny Carson had that I watched with my father in my living room, right?’ And he said, ‘Yes, you are.’ And I said, ‘Then I’m good.’
  • Conan O’Brien • On leaving “Late Night” to host “The Tonight Show” in the wake of news that Jay Leno’s going to host a talk show on NBC at 10 p.m. He says he’s OK with it, and the option’s better than Leno going to a competing network. O’Brien’s last “Late Night” is Friday. • source
