Biz: Nooooo … really? Oil companies want deepwater drilling ban to end

  • There are things the administration could implement today that would allow the industry to go back to work tomorrow without an arbitrary six-month time limit.
  • Transocean CEO Steven Newman • Arguing that the U.S. should back off its somewhat controversial deepwater drilling ban. (His company ran the Deepwater Horizon.) He’s not alone – the BBC quotes Chevron and BP execs (not Tony Hayward) saying similar things. The oil industry is pushing against the regulations and a court decision about the drilling ban is forthcoming. Haley Barbour got a lot of crap about making a similar statement recently, despite the fact that BP is paying workers who have been laid off due to the spill. source

  • This is extremely harmful. I want to know when are you going to send someone to my backyard and clean up my mess because I can’t even live in my house because of the smell.

Chevron blamed an undetected underground leak for the issue, which spilled 50 gallons of crude oil a minute into the river. What oil spill did you think we were talking about? It’s not that one, although that one is pretty awful. This is the other one. source

Biz: The Fortune 500’s top five and how they got to the top

  • one ExxonMobil: Making money off of the world’s addiction to oil, their massive profits were up 19% in 2008.
  • two Wal-Mart: Making money off of the world’s addiction to cheap crap, their profits were up 7% in 2008.
  • three Chevron: People like putting gas in their cars, and indirectly, money in Chevron’s cash-lined pockets.
