Offbeat, Politics: Sarah Palin invokes unicorns, pixie dust in attack on Dems

  • [Democrats] act like they’re permanent residents of a unicorn ranch in fantasyland if they really think they’re gonna be able to turn it around with the liberal policies they have to continue, and you know, it’s pixie dust.
  • Sarah Palin • At a speech in California, although with a quote like that, the context is irrelevant. She also commended California for being the only state that “puts a mama grizzly on its flag.” Good Lord. source

Politics: Wow: Jerry Brown somehow upstages Meg Whitman’s housekeeper

  • Dear Jerry Brown: Look, you had the perfect opening to totally win the California gubernatorial race. Meg Whitman was caught hiring an illegal immigrant and firing her under questionable pretenses – a political leveraging point that doesn’t come up every day. Too bad you had to call a police department last month, only to have one of your aides refer to Meg Whitman as a “whore.” Did you not think that was gonna get out and damage your campaign? The two really stupid decisions cancel one another out. That’s right, friends. California easily has the year’s dirtiest gubernatorial race. Sorry, New York. source

U.S.: Good Samaritan validates reason for Amber Alert’s existence

  • The second time I reached him, the way he acted – yes, I was, for a split second I was nervous until I saw the little girl and all fear was out the window after that. I didn’t have no fear. I wasn’t thinking of me no more. I was just thinking we need to get that little girl to safety.
  • Fresno, Calif. resident Victor Perez • On singlehandedly stopping a known gang member (who was already on felony probation) from kidnapping a young girl. The Amber Alert for Elisa Cardenas, 8, was very close to Perez’s home, and when he saw Gregorio Gonzales driving by in his truck, Perez had his cousin call 911 – and he drove after Gonzales. The fact that Perez managed to stop Gonzales from kidnapping Cardenas verifies the reason the Amber Alert system exists. Great job, Victor. You saved the day. (Gonzales was caught a few hours later by police, by the way, but he let go of Cardenas after Perez stopped him.) source

Politics: Meg Whitman’s entire campaign eaten by the immigration monster

  • bad Meg Whitman’s political image has become centered on a single issue: What she did to her former undocumented housekeeper.
  • worseCalifornia’s gubernatorial debate last night became about the issue of immigration, which pretty much sucks for her. source

U.S.: Arnold, California legislature finally reach deal on budget

  • 3 months without a budget, but with a lot of tightrope, in California source
  • » Keeping it under wraps: Legislative officials plan to reveal the details of the plan later this week but are currently keeping it hush-hush. You guys have already had to wait since July 1 for a firm budget plan, so what’s a few more days? You bastards are so impatient.

U.S.: My work is done here: Prop. 8 judge Vaughn Walker retiring

  • He’s only going to be remembered for that one case. Vaughn Walker had a long career as a judge in California, but it’s a decision he made in August that made him famous. Walker, the chief judge of the Northern District of California, struck down Proposition 8 using a tightly-written decision that law scholars are going to be reading for decades to come. Walker’s second act? He doesn’t have one. He’s retiring at the end of the year. Might as well go out on top. Bravo, dude. Have fun playing golf. source

Politics, U.S.: California Democrats edging out their opponents

  • thenWeeks ago, Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer seemed perilously close to losing their respective races for Governor and the Senate.
  • now Brown is now ahead of Meg Whitman for the first time in weeks, and Boxer has extended her lead over Carly Fiorina to eight points.
  • FOR A supposedly blue state, California was looking uncharacteristically hostile to Democrats as recently as last week. However, the latest USC/LA Times poll puts both Democrats ahead  of their GOP opponents (Boxer more comfortably so). Possible reasons for the turnaround include Whitman’s over-saturation of the  ad market (she’s spent $119 million so far on the race), and this brutal attack ad from Barbara Boxer. Whatever the reason, it’s a good day for Democrats in the Golden State. source

U.S.: California city lacks any oversight whatsoever

  • $56 million a year in illegal taxation in one city source
  • » According to an audit by State Controller John Chiang, the City Council of Bell, CA approved millions of dollars in fraudulent taxation in 2007, mostly for the benefit of former City Administrator Robert Rizzo. The charges include $93,000 to pay off Rizzo’s personal debts, $10 million to one of Rizzo’s business partners, and $1 million in pay raises for Rizzo and his assistant. The taxes were raised without voter approval and lacking any substantive debate on the part of the city council, Chiang says. The best part? The audit isn’t even done yet!
