Politics: Whoa! Glenn Beck has something nice to say about President Obama!

  • This is probably the best speech he has ever given, and with all sincerity, thank you Mr. President, for becoming the president of the United States of America last night.
  • Glenn Beck (!) • On President Obama’s speech last night. Is this the most complimentary thing Beck has ever said about Obama? Probably. But it wasn’t without a catch; Beck took a dig at Obama for saying “what he should have said on Saturday,” and added that “a leader says that on Day 1.” Still, not so bad from the guy who once called our President a racist. source

Politics: Gallup’s “Most Admired” poll: SARAH PALIN BEAT OPRAH?!?!?!?!?!

  • 22% of people think Obama is the male they admire most – worse than 2008 or 2009, but still decent
  • 17% of people think Hillary Clinton is the female they most admire – she kills at this poll, usually
  • 12% of people think Sarah Palin is the female they most admire; who are these people? source
  • » To emphasize our dislike of this poll: Sarah Palin beat Oprah. SARAH PALIN BEAT OPRAH!!!!!!!! While George W. Bush was just behind Obama, he didn’t have 12 percent. Cannot believe this, guys. We think we might have to go to bed after this one.

Politics, U.S.: McConnell explains Republican approach to legislating

  • There’s much for [Democrats] to be angst-ridden about. If they think it’s bad now, wait ’till next year.
  • Senator Mitch McConnell • Salivating at the prospect of continuing to make life unpleasant for Democrats in the next Congress. McConnell stated in November that the “single most important thing” for Senate Republicans to accomplish was defeating Barack Obama in 2012. Not to overstate the obvious, but man, this guy really gets a kick out of antagonizing Democrats. source

U.S.: Write a threatening poem, go straight to jail

  • cause In 2007, Johnny Logan Spencer wrote and posted online a poem depicting the (obviously fictional) assassination of Barack Obama.
  • effectSpencer has since been sentenced to three years in prison. Yeah, he shouldn’t have done what he did, but really, three years? source

Politics: Obama ensures us that he’s not thinking about Sarah Palin

  • I don’t think about Sarah Palin. … Obviously Sarah Palin has a strong base of support in the Republican Party and I respect those skills. But I spend most of my time right now on how I can be the best possible president.
  • President Barack Obama • Making sure to emphasize that he’s not in campaign mode for the next two years. It’s notable he mentions Sarah Palin, though, because that’s someone who probably will be. source

Politics, U.S.: Who do bookies think will be the next President?

  • 50:1 odds of a Donald Trump presidency source
  • » Pundits, shmundits. If you want to know how people really think elections will turn out, best turn to the betting markets, where people actually pay a price for bad predictions. Chris Good at The Atlantic scoured three betting sites, and tallied the odds they gave various politicians of becoming the next POTUS. Obama is at the top at all three sites; bettors are split on whether Romney or Palin is the second most likely. Frankly, we’re skeptical of the inclusion of some names (is anybody really expecting Joe the Plumber to run for president?), but hey, it’s fun to see where people put their money.

U.S., World: India trip: Obama chooses Mumbai hotel attacked by terrorists

  • We visit here to send a very clear message that, in our determination to give our people a future of security and prosperity, the United States and India stand united.
  • President Barack Obama • Explaining why he chose to stay in, of all places, a Mumbai hotel that was infamously attacked back in 2008. Around 30 staff members and guests at the Taj were killed in November 2008, out of 164 overall deaths. Beyond commemorating the memories of those killed in the terrorist attack, dude’s working out some deals on his tour of India, including a $4.1 billion agreement to buy military transport planes from Boeing which would support 22,000 jobs. source

Politics: Post-midterms, Obama gets a big-up from the f-word

  • Obama’s been getting railed upon from all corners for a while now, but we have to admit that he seemed to handle his party’s lack of success yesterday fairly well today. He had a measured response to the questions he got at his press conference today, and didn’t get angry or testy at any point. Which for fans of the president is heartening. Also heartening is this site which has been all over our Facebook today. “What the fuck has Obama done so far?” A lot. A defensive measure so solid that you’d think that the site was produced by Obama’s staff, until you realize that the word “fuck” is right there in the URL. source

Politics, U.S.: Clinton holds more sway over Dems than Obama

  • 48% of Democrats like a candidate more if Barack Obama endorses them
  • 53% of Democrats are persuaded by a Bill Clinton endorsement source
  • » They don’t call him the Big Dog for nothing. He’s been out of office twelve years, yet Democratic voters trust his judgment more than that of their official party leader. Clinton’s been in high demand this cycle, and luckly for Democrats, he’s been more than happy to rise to the occasion. The 42nd President has been campaigning for Democrats left and right, and many believe it was his endorsement of Blanche Lincoln that enabled her to defeat Bill Halter in the Arkansas Senate primary. Curiously, there hasn’t been a corresponding demand for George W. Bush on the Republican side.
