U.S.: Man takes loaded gun onto aircraft, TSA doesn’t notice

  • in theory, we like the tsa. Unpleasant as “enhanced” pat downs are, it’s a small price to pay for the assurance of safety. And if that were actually how things worked, we’d have no complaints. But as soon as someone is able to successfully take a loaded gun onto an aircraft, we have to call BS. Because at that point, why even have a TSA? What’s worse, this apparently happens all the time; ABC News reports that some airports have a failure rate of 70% (!). Granted, this time it was an accident. But what about when it’s not? It’s about time to seriously re-think airport security.  source

U.S.: Ronald Reagan once stopped an air traffic controller crisis – with pink slips

  • 2010 In Spain, air traffic controllers forced the country’s military to get involved to stop a strike. The workers are upset because their average wages are getting cut – from roughly $463,000 per year to $263,000 per year.
  • 1981 In a similar strike involving air traffic controllers in the U.S., Ronald Reagan called a union’s bluff and fired nearly 12,000 striking air traffic controllers, which led to smaller staffs that did work that was just as good. source

U.S.: Thanks Candy Crowley: The no-waver TSA begins to waver

  • Ah boy … Here comes the backtrack. Just hours after their leader, John Pistole, embarrassed himself on CNN’s “State of the Union” by suggesting that feeling people up was OK (thanks to some very tough questioning by host Candy Crowley), the TSA released a statement suggesting that they may in fact bend their policies. “This has always been viewed as an evolving program that will be adapted as conditions warrant,” the statement said, “and we greatly appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the American people.” How far will they bend? How much will they adapt? We’ll find out in the next episode of “TSA Chief Goes on Television and Comes off Looking Like a Jackass.” source

  • Oh yeah, that’s right. Take a look at what those full-body airport scans are gonna look like. What did you think we were talking about, anyway? source
