Politics: Mitch Daniels close to decision on presidential run

  • I don’t think that I’ve waited too long, but I believe I should come to some decision. There are a lot of people waiting and I owe them an answer.
  • Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels • On running for President in 2012. Daniels is a favorite amongst both fiscal conservatives and the Republican establishment, having served at the head of George W. Bush’s Office of Management and Budget. His low-key (read: bland) personality and moderate views on social issues could cause him trouble in a GOP primary, but he’s arguable stronger against Obama than almost any other GOP prospect. He recently won a Washington straw poll, which would be encouraging for him if Washington had any sway in Republican Presidential primaries. source

Politics: It’s decision time: Prospective 2012 candidates start making choices

  • no Rep. Mike Pence has announced that he won’t run for President in 2012, as many had speculated. Instead, he’ll have a run at the Indiana Governorship.
  • maybe Sen. John Thune of South Dakota is close to deciding whether or not to throw his hat in the 2012 ring, telling Politico that he’ll “fish or cut bait soon.”
  • yes?The big shocker is that Jon Huntsman, Obama’s Ambassador to China, is reportedly “leaning” towards a run. We’ll believe it when we see it. source

Politics: Tim Pawlenty casts self in “Independence Day” sequel

  • Poor Tim Pawlenty. For reasons we’ve never fully understood, he got pigeonholed early on as 2012’s “bland” candidate (“blandidate,” if you will), and despite his best efforts, he can’t seem to shake that label for some stupid reason. So what’s the most rational way for Pawlenty to fix this? If you didn’t answer, “release an ad for his book that looks like a Michael Bay trailer,” you’re clearly a moron. In terms of movie-ness, this commercial makes Palin’s Mama Grizzlies video look like a Mike Gravel ad.  source

Politics: Mitt Romney wins New Hampshire GOP straw poll

  • 35% Mitt Romney’s take in the New Hampshire poll
  • Why this matters: As one of the earliest states to hold its primary (only Iowa votes first), New Hampshire is critically important in determining presidential nominees. Although he won the state in ’08, some had worried that the presence of Tea Partiers might thwart his chances this time around. But if this poll is any indicator, Romney can relax: the very same people surveyed here also just elected a Tea Party activist to head the state GOP. Seeing as he probably won’t win in socially-conservative Iowa, New Hampshire is crucial if Romney wants to be the Republican nominee for President. This poll suggests he might have a fighting chance. Some other notable results:
  • 11% libertarian hero Ron Paul’s second-place result
  • <3% ultra-coiffed Donald Trump’s absurdly high showing
  • 0% well-regarded former lobbyist Haley Barbour’s showing; ouch source

Politics: Chris Christie confirms, once again, that he’s not running for President

  • I am not arrogant enough to believe that after one year as governor of New Jersey and seven years as United States attorney that I am ready to be President of the United States, so I’m not going to run.
  • Chris Christie • Deflating the hopes of Republicans everywhere. Christie is seen by many as an extremely viable Presidential candidate: charismatic, combative, fiscally conservative, and from a blue state. Unfortunately, he seems to have absolutely no interest in running, and has categorically ruled it out in the past. Well, if anything, it’s good news for Mitt Romney! source
