World: Haitian elections: They needed a good day. They got a bad one.

  • 12 of the 19 presidential candidates say the election is a sham source
  • » The end effect: For a country constantly overwhelmed by chaos, it’s just another thing. Nearly all of the major candidates protested the results, claiming that they were skewed in favor of current president Rene Preval’s government. They said as much in a statement: “We are asking the men and women of Haiti to organize peacefully against the Preval government. We are asking everyone to mobilize.” Haiti needed a good day today. Instead, they got another bad one. If the election results are a sham, may the people who slanted them feel the wrath of the international community. Surely Wyclef Jean, of all people, would’ve done better than this.

World: Well, Wikileaks’ Cablegate pretty much sucks for the U.S.

  • At the start of a series of daily extracts from the US embassy cables – many of which are designated ‘secret’ – the Guardian can disclose that Arab leaders are privately urging an air strike on Iran and that US officials have been instructed to spy on the UN’s leadership.
  • A sentence at the start of the Guardian’s package on Wikileaks’ “Cablegate” • Which kind of says it all. The U.S. is going to have a lot of fun cleaning up this mess. Also worth reading: The New York Times’ package. source

World: China wants to get North, South Korea back to negotiating table

  • 2008 China, North and South Korea, Japan, Russia and the U.S., had six-party disarmament talks about North Korea’s nuclear program. The North walked out when it became clear it was an intervention.
  • 2010 China, looking to help ease things between on-the-brink-of-war North and South Korea, is pushing for another round of talks. China says it won’t be like last time; South Korea is thinking about it. source

  • We are what we are: sad, distrustful … We have a natural lack of trust.
  • Peruvian President Alan Garcia • Suggesting he has a low approval rating (34 percent approve, 62 percent disapprove) because Peruvians are naturally unhappy. He suggests nearby countries, like Brazil, are happier. Way to flip the message. Are the people saying “BOO” or “BOO-urns”?  source

Biz, World: Angry Irish people take to streets to protest tough austerity plan

  • We’ve seen this song and dance before. First in Greece, then Belgium, then France, then in Britain, but it’s still not any more frustrating to watch – especially in Ireland’s case. The Irish had a solid decade of economic growth, only to see the economy go into freefall and be forced to take upon tons of bailout money in the span of about two years. So that’s why these people are protesting in Dublin today. They’re angry because of the insane cuts they’ll be forced to swallow – the worst of any European nation so far. World: Portugal smacked by debt crisis, high unemployment, brain drain

  • I will get out as soon as I graduate next year, to Brazil. It has a growing economy and people like me can do well there.
  • Portuguese college student Alexandria Silva • Explaining her long-term plan for surviving in this economy. That’s right. She plans to leave Portugal, which is about to get smacked with some debt crisis drama, to go to South America. There are some other issues, too – due to insane job-security (especially in the public sector), older Portuguese people already have a stranglehold on the good jobs, and worse, there’s an 11 percent unemployment rate. So, now, some of the country’s best and brightest are leaving. Sad, really. source
