Biz, Tech: Does the U.S. think companies should patent genes?

  • NO they think that genes are part of nature and shouldn’t be source
  • » Why this is a big deal: Well, among other things, this is a change of policy for them, one that could make it harder for the biotechnology and medicine industries to keep innovations unique. We wish that the government would make this distinction on software patents over trivial things. See, that’s where a change in decision is necessary.

Tech: Peace out, Chad Hurley: YouTube co-founder heads for the exit

  • Thanks for the viral memories, Chad. It’s always a sad day when a founder leaves a company, as Chad Hurley is about to do with YouTube. Especially when the company runs one of the three most important sites on the entire Web (along with Google proper and Facebook). Hurley, who has enough money under his belt that he probably never has to work ever again, has earned the chance to do something else. He’s been replaced as chief executive by Salar Kamangar, currently the company’s vice president of product management and the guy who’s been doing much of the grunt work over the last couple of years. Kamangar has made the company nearly profitable, yeah, but Hurley made it relevant. source

Tech: MySpace’s new redesign: Better than that crappy logo

  • This may lose us cool points, but we hate the logo and love the design of the new MySpace site. It’s clear that they actually gave designers a lot more freedom, and now it looks like somewhere we wouldn’t be embarrassed to find ourselves. We also hear that they’re limiting the amount of freedom you can have with individual page design, to which we say about freaking time! Leave the design to the designers, or at least set a high bar like Tumblr does. source

Tech: LIMEWIRE IS DEAD. IN ALL CAPS. (FOR EMPHASIS)

  • THIS IS AN OFFICIAL NOTICE THAT LIMEWIRE IS UNDER A COURT-ORDERED INJUNCTION TO STOP DISTRIBUTING AND SUPPORTING ITS FILE-SHARING SOFTWARE. DOWNLOADING OR SHARING COPYRIGHTED CONTENT WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION IS ILLEGAL.
  • A notice on LimeWire’s Web site • Informing the world that the groundbreaking file-sharing service is no more. It lost a permanent injunction, rendering the decade-old site off-limits. You’ll be missed, and not just for all of the spyware you put on our computers. The next step? The RIAA goes for the money grab. Sad.  source

Tech: Get of the week: Engadget’s PlayStation Phone story (not bad, guys!)

  • Can’t you hear the fanboys squealing? This device was made for them. This get by Engadget is nearly as awesome as Gizmodo’s iPhone leak. Well-played, kids. And to Sony: This is a very smart way to get people to use your phones. source

Tech: PayPal (deservedly) gets the freeze from competitor WePay

  • Someone was gonna call them out for this at some point, and it might as well be WePay, a competitor which focuses on setting up group payments (rather than PayPal’s person-to-person payments). They put this giant block of ice outside of a PayPal developer conference in San Francisco earlier today. Publicity stunt? Sure. But PayPal has only been freezing accounts without cause for years, and what a way to call them out on it. source

Tech: Microsoft departing exec seems a future without Windows

  • Complexity kills. Complexity sucks the life out of users, developers and IT. Complexity makes products difficult to plan, build, test and use. Complexity introduces security challenges. Complexity causes administrator frustration.
  • Departing Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie • In a “post-apocalyptic” memo he released recently to Microsoft employees. What’s interesting about the memo is that it barely even mentions Windows, but instead emphasizes that Microsoft needs to change its overall approach to cheap, easy-to-use devices if it wants to stay in the game. In fact, in a tag cloud someone did of the memo, the top two words were “devices” and “services,” two things that other companies do much better than Microsoft right now. source

Tech: Digg realizes that too many people are working for them

  • six the number of people who work on Reddit’s entire site
  • 67 the number of people who work on Digg at the moment
  • 25 the number of staffers Digg will be cutting to get profitable source
  • » Cutting the “overhead”: Why is it that Reddit has a much smaller staff, yet is completely kicking Digg’s butt at the moment? Good question. Either way, Digg (which is unprofitable) is cutting 37 percent of its staff in an effort to rebuild lost momentum in the platform and cut significant costs. “It’s been an incredibly tough decision,” wrote Matt Williams, the company’s brand-new CEO. “I wish it weren’t necessary. However, I know it’s the right choice for Digg’s future success as a business.” Also, a product refocus is coming very soon to correct the last one.
