Politics: Rep. Allen West didn’t much like that Obama speech

  • What you continue to see is a third world dictator-like arrogance, that’s what I saw in that speech last week…This whole talk about shared prosperity I mean that really gives me the goosebumps because I’m starting to believe that a community organizer is nothing but a low-level socialist agitator.
  • Rep. Allen West • Speaking to conservative radio host Laura Ingraham about President Obama’s speech on the deficit last week. This is an extreme example of the general tenor of conservative criticism since he made the speech (another point being that he specifically invited Paul Ryan to the speech, only to trash his plan publicly). This isn’t surprising, as you can usually count on Allen West’s rhetorical style to be intensely hard-right, as well as loaded with hyperbolic drama — dictatorial arrogance normally has a higher price than speechifying. source

Politics: 2012 election poll: Nobody’s really doing it for GOP voters yet

  • It really sucks to be a GOP voter right now. Despite wide frustration on the right side of the aisle over Barack Obama’s policies, nobody appears to be doing the trick for conservative voters, according to this poll by The Washington Post and ABC News. And it gets worse: In a general election, Obama would best the entire field. Only Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee really get within fighting distance. Tim Pawlenty and Newt Gingrich are 15 points behind. Sarah Palin is 17 points behind, by far the worst showing. source

Politics: Wisconsin: Recall campaign gains steam, control of State Senate now in play

  • » Total Recall: Democratic efforts to flip control of the Wisconsin State Senate just reached an important milestone, as organizers have now collected enough signatures to force three Republican senators into recall elections. If Democrats win all three elections, they’ll be rewarded with control of the Wisconsin State Senate. This is, of course, pending validation of the collected signatures; in all three cases, Democratic organizers submitted around 150% of the required number of signatures, so it’s unlikely that the petitions will be invalidated on those grounds. If Democrats are successful in recalling even one Wisconsin Republican, it’ll be an enormous victory for the pro-union movement, which launched the recall campaign last month in response to Governor Scott Walker’s union-busting “budget-repair” bill.

  • Rolling Stone vs. the Pentagon: A Pentagon inquiry into the Rolling Stone article “The Runaway General,” which was written by Michael Hastings and basically got Stanley McChrystal fired, has by their claims vindicated the former General. They said they were unable to verify the accuracy of the events detailed, and that in many areas they could find no witnesses to corroborate the claims. Hastings and his editors aren’t having it, however; they stand behind the accuracy of the piece, making this something of a murky, “my word versus yours” scenario. Said Rolling Stone Executive Editor Eric Bates: “It’s accurate in every detail.” source

Politics: Timothy Geithner: Republicans will raise the debt ceiling (I hope)

  • I want to make it perfectly clear that Congress will raise the debt ceiling. They recognize it and they told the president that on Wednesday in the White House and I sat there with them and they said, ‘We recognize we have to do this and we’re not going to play around with it, because we know the risk would catastrophic.’
  • Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner • Speaking with a hushed tone about the need to increase the debt ceiling, the kind of thing the GOP would possibly screw with the debt ceiling. The U.S. government has just $76 billion of breathing room right now, and need to pass an increase by July 8. Problem is, Republicans want a deal to go with this. “In addition to raising the debt limit we want financial controls, we want cuts in spending accompanying a raising of the debt ceiling.” said Paul “Fancypants” Ryan. “And that is what I believe they (Republican congressional leaders) told the president.” Oh God, they’re gonna screw this up. source

Politics: Is Andrew Breitbart right? Did the “silent majority” win in Wisconsin?

  • We’re sure he didn’t mean it the way Nixon did: Back in the late 1960s, Richard Nixon famously made a speech about the Vietnam War where he said this: “And so tonight—to you, the great silent majority of my fellow Americans—I ask for your support.” Yesterday, the owner of Breitbart.com, BigGovernment, and so on suggested this while on the stoop in Wisconsin: “We are witnessing the end of community organizing … the silent majority won.” Even if our boy wasn’t making an apples-to-apples comparison, the words are symbolic. source

Politics: Three harsh criticisms Obama said into a hot mic last night

  • Say what you want about CBS’ Mark Knoller, but he gets stories. The dude may have a massive beard, but that beard is probably large enough to fit a high-quality tape recorder into. Which is why the White House correspondent was able to pretty much beat everyone else to a pretty killer Obama story this morning. (With audio!) See, Obama thought he was talking to donors. But he had an hot mic on that was accidentally pumping audio from the closed-door fundraiser into the press room, and Knoller caught it. Including the audio. While Obama said fairly harsh things about the White House IT department, like “We are like 30 years behind – we can’t get our phones to work,” the stuff he said about the budget situation and Paul Ryan had the strongest impact:
  • On health care “I said (to Republicans), ‘You want to repeal health care? Go at it. We’ll have that debate. You’re not going to be able to do that by nickel-and-diming me in the budget. … You think we’re stupid?'”
  • On Planned Parenthood He reportedly told Boehner and his staff, regarding the controversial riders: “Put it in a separate bill. We’ll call it up. And if you think you can overturn my veto, try it. But don’t try to sneak this through.”
  • On Paul Ryan “… the same guy that voted for two wars that were unpaid for, voted for the Bush tax cuts that were unpaid for, voted for the prescription drug bill that cost as much as my health care bill …” source

Politics: New gig for Stanley McChrystal = Upsetting Pat Tillman’s mom

  • Mary Tillman furious at McChrystal’s new gig: President Obama appointed former General Stanley McChrystal to lead an advisory panel on military families, and the struggles they face when their kin are in combat. Mary Tillman, mother of Pat Tillman, the ex-NFL ranger famously killed by friendly fire (a fact the military, and allegedly McChrystal himself, had sought to hide) in Afghanistan, expressed outrage. “[McChrystal] deliberately helped cover up Pat’s death and he has never adequately apologized to us for doing that… I think it’s a slap in the face to all soldiers to appoint this man to be on this committee.” source
