Tech: Bill Gates thinks the iPad is merely “okay,” but not great

  • It’s okay. The scenarios aren’t that clear. But it’s good looking. [Steve Jobs] does good design, and [the iPad] is absolutely a good example of that.
  • Bill Gates • Discussing the iPad yesterday, in blunt terms. The former Microsoft CEO and Chairman has a history of being a straight-shooter when he needs to be, but has also praised Steve Jobs in the past for his ability to save Apple (and then some). But dude doesn’t think the iPad is gonna change the world. source

U.S., World: Happy Earth Day or something. It’s 40 years old today.

The New York Times (of course) has a killer timeline on the environment, and Earth Day’s role within that history. source

Tech: Is Facebook’s “Like” button a bid for world domination?

  • Some seem to think it’s great. Others think Mark Zuckerberg overestimates his own service. Yesterday’s Facebook announcements were nothing short of epic, showing how Zuckerberg was able to turn his site into a link-servicing platform which allowed for a wider number of sharing opportunities. PC World’s Peter Smith makes a good point, however: Lots of people see Facebook as a time-waster, not a game-changing superplatform. Our opinion: If they can get us traffic, we don’t care what Mark Zuckerberg’s opinion of it is. source

Culture: “Looney Tunes” returning in suburban form for some reason

  • So, can you get behind the idea of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny living in the ‘burbs? Well, you’ll have a little bit of time to get used to the idea before it becomes real, as the Cartoon Network merely announced the new “Looney Tunes Show” yesterday. As you might guess, the show will do the same stupid thing they’ve done with every Looney Tune cartoon since about 1989 – put classic characaters in a postmodern context. Listen, guys: The only time it actually worked was on “Tiny Toon Adventures,” so let’s not push it. (Also on the stable: A “Mad Magazine” cartoon reboot. Which hopefully will be better than “Mad TV” was. Also, rock monster Andrew W.K.’s non-cartoon reality show “Destroy Build Destroy” isn’t going anywhere!) source

Culture: Comedy Central wusses out on “South Park” big time

  • We’d be so hypocritical against our own message, our own thoughts, if we said, ‘okay, well let’s not make fun of them because they won’t hurt us.’ It matters to me when we talk about Muhammad that I can say we did this… and I can stand behind that.
  • “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker • Regarding the whole “Muhammad” controversy that’s trailed the show this week. He made these comments before last night’s show hit a fever pitch, and on the show there was prominent, over-the-top censorship of the word “Muhammad.” But on the other hand, there were blasphemous images for other religions on the show – Jesus watching porn and Buddha snorting coke. Because we wouldn’t want some of our society’s greatest social satirists to wuss out on us here. (Update: Comedy Central put in the large amount of censorship, and won’t let the “South Park” dudes stream the episode.) source
