Culture: On Judd Apatow’s “Funny People”: Dude needs to cut his stuff

  • Sandler’s George Simmons is a guy who, when fate offers him the chance to be a good person, chooses to be funny instead. Judd Apatow’s problem is just the opposite; he could be the funniest director in Hollywood if he stopped being such a good guy.
  • Slate columnist Dana Stevens • In a review of “Funny People” where she argues that while the film is good, director Judd Apatow has problems with the way he’s approached Hollywood in the wake of his success – the number of producer credits (on films of varying quality), the way he brings an all-inclusive feel to his productions – which are fairly clear in the film. Apatow doesn’t want to cut from the flick, so he didn’t, creating a good but overlong movie in need of editing (especially in the last half hour). The overall reviews lean that way too. It has a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, lower than his previous directorial efforts. • source

Culture: The divorce entrance is just as good as the wedding entrance

  • As we noted before, Chris Brown is a lucky bastard. People are actually watching his music – virally – with zero worry about the Rihanna incident. This parody of the phenomenon isn’t as amazing as the original but it’s still worth writing home about. source

U.S.: Congressmen can’t stand the heat of holding town hall meetings

  • I had felt they would be pointless. There is no point in meeting with my constituents and listen to them and have them listen to you if what is basically an unruly mob prevents you from having an intelligent conversation.
  • New York Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop • On his decision to suspend town hall meetings with his constituents after a June event got incredibly out of hand. Bishop was forced to run to his car under police escort after some of the people at the meeting got out of hand in their opinions on energy, health care, and the auto bailout. He’s not alone, but the targets tend to be House Democrats who supported the $787 billion stimulus. YELLING ISN’T GOING TO SOLVE ANYTHING, PEOPLE! • source

Offbeat: Pistol placement is key: A guy shoots himself while relieving himself

  • The shot isn’t expected to be life-threatening, so we can make fun of it! A 21-year-old guy was wandering the streets of South Bend, Ind. and decided to take a whiz. Unfortunately, he was carrying a concealed weapon (which he had a permit for), and in the process managed to shoot himself in the leg. Genius! (But as big of one as Plaxico Burress.) source

  • The guy Jim Burwell
  • The evil sideYears after his death, it came out that Burwell was a top-ranking Klansman, a revelation which shocked many. “A whole lot of black people considered him their friend,” said civil rights activist Ron Scott. source

U.S.: The beer summit went so well, there might be a sequel

  • We’re guessing Obama won’t be on board, though. Sgt. James Crowley says that the meeting between him and Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. went pretty well, and while nobody apologized, they plan to meet again. One thing that Crowley noted is that nobody apologized for their actions in the beer-off. We’re guessing that they’ll meet again where there aren’t any cameras, they’ll become the best of friends, buddy-comedy style and star in a big hit movie called “Arresting Officer.” source
