U.S.: Holy crap: Here’s the video of Gen. David Petraeus fainting

  • Wow, this looks bad. John McCain went white during the hearing when questioning the general on Afghanistan. After a few minutes, Petraeus was feeling better, eating and drinking water. He apparently didn’t eat breakfast before the hearing. Still, an immensely harrowing clip. source

U.S.: Russ Feingold says the White House should explain “czar” system

  • The White House seems to want to fight the attacks against it for having too many ‘czars’ on a political level rather than a substantive level. I don’t think that’s the right approach.
  • Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold • At a hearing yesterday regarding the Obama administration’s use of czars to handle specific issues facing the presidency. Their use has been a touchy subject for some, especially if your name is Glenn Beck. “If there are good answers to the questions that have been raised,” Feingold says regarding the White House’s blog post on the subject, “why not give them instead of attacking the motives or good faith of those who have raised questions?” Also raised were constitutional and oversight issues – should the Senate be taking a look at these czars? • source

U.S.: Sonia Sotomayor: Running through hoops like Sonic the Hedgehog

  • When I worked hard at trying to convince my colleagues of something after listening to them, they’ll often try it for a while. I mean, we’ll have to talk together. We’ll have to figure out that issue together.
  • Supreme Court justice candidate Sonia Sotomayor • On dealing with her potential fellow justices on issues of politics and hashing out disagreements. Sotomayor’s been putting on quite a show during her Senate hearings the last two days with the wording of her answers. She’s willing to be a critic of herself, correcting things she’d said that have been turned back on her, and overall keeping her composure in a situation that would knock others flat. No matter your political persuasion, she’ll probably be a good justice for these aspects alone. • source
