  • Lt. John Pike (according to a pepper-sprayed protester at UC Davis) • Speaking to fellow officers before the infamous pepper-spray incident on Friday. According to the protester, who spoke at length anonymously to Boing Boing, the pepper spray he used was military grade, and it still hurts, two days later. “It’s supposed to be used at a minimum of 15 feet,” the protester told Xeni Jardin. “But he sprayed us at point blank range.” Highly recommend you read Boing Boing’s photo-heavy account of the incident, which is very informative. source

Politics: Daily Caller reporter, videographer protected by Occupy protesters

  • The protesters came up to me right away and asked if I needed any medical assistance. They were actually very kind and helpful. It was the police officers who were very aggressive.
  • Daily Caller reporter Michelle Fields • Discussing how protesters treated her after she and videographer Direna Cousins were struck by NYPD officers earlier today. “Direna had a camera in her hand and I had a microphone, and we were being hit,” she said. “When I fell to the ground I said at one point, ‘I’m just covering this! I’m covering this!’  And the officer just said, ‘Come on, get up, get up,’ before pulling me up by my jacket.’” As ThinkProgress notes, The Daily Caller’s Occupy coverage has been negative, but protesters helped them anyway.  source

  • 80+ arrested at Brooklyn Bridge during today’s protests source
  • » The second notable set of Brooklyn Bridge arrests: In something of a return to its roots for the Occupy movement, a number of protesters got arrested while attempting to head towards the Brooklyn Bridge, which mimics a protest from during the early part of the Occupy movement, in which over 700 people got arrested by the NYPD for walking on the iconic bridge. But the tone during today’s “Day of Action” protests was different — those who got arrested did so for sitting at the base of the bridge, while many others stuck to the pedestrian path, staying off the road.

  • 50+ people arrested near Wall Street this morning source
  • » An attempt to prevent trading: A number of protesters, many from Zuccotti Park, tried to prevent traders from reaching the floor of Wall Street, but trading started at the usual 9:30 a.m. despite this. Protesters held up signs that said such things as “Tear down this Wall Street” and shouted phrases like “We aren’t afraid of your nightsticks,” in reference to the NYPD. “We’re not going to go away,” one protester, Davie Field, told the New York Times. “You can slash our tents and kick us out of the park, but we’ll keep coming back every day.”

Politics: Thousands of OWS’ library books missing after raid

  • Looking to check out a book while you Occupy? Until the dismantling of the Zuccotti Park encampment earlier this week that was a fairly simple proposition, thanks to the “People’s Library,” which was some 5,000 volumes strong. The library’s entire setup was confiscated by police during the raid, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office insisted via Twitter that the books would be available to be picked up today. The Occupiers charged with retrieving the books were incensed to find, however, that thousands of their books were missing or destroyed. Several laptops kept around the library are missing, as well; the proprietors of the OWS Library Twitter condemned Mayor Bloomberg thusly: “So @MikeBloomberg you lied, so where is the #OWSLibrary? Because it’s not at the Sanitation Garage.” source

U.S.: Bay Area Occupy movement starts anew with Berkeley encampment

  • This despite threats by officials to shut it down. In what might be a good example for the New York movement as it attempts to regroup, members of Occupy Oakland have joined with the Occupy Cal movement to start a fresh encampment. This isn’t without controversy, however: Occupy Cal had its camp torn down November 9, and the university isn’t exactly taking so kindly to having a new one. “We will not allow encampments equivalent to what has occurred in Oakland and San Francisco,” said Chancellor Robert Birgeneau. The move could potentially lead to a conflict with police. Meanwhile, the San Francisco encampment is staying strong, and plans to meet with Mayor Ed Lee today. source

U.S.: Michael Bloomberg: Occupy Wall Street not expression

  • New York City is the city where you can come and express yourself. What was happening in Zuccotti Park was not that.
  • Mayor Michael Bloomberg • Offering a tough take on Occupy Wall Street this morning, after a long night in which police randomly showed up at the encampment’s door and gave protesters 20 minutes to vacate. The mayor seemed to imply with his statement that safety concerns trumped First Amendment concerns, which is perhaps a dangerous take on the law. source

  • No longer Mayor Quan’s legal adviser. Resigned at 2 am. Support Occupy Oakland, not the 1% and its government facilitators.
  • Attorney Dan Siegel • Revealing that he resigned as Oakland mayor Jean Quan’s legal counsel, in protest of the treatment of Occupy protesters. In an early-morning raid of the camp, 32 people were arrested, including many clergy members. As we previously reported, the Occupy Oakland group received eviction notices Friday night, a day after a shooting death brought fresh negative focus onto the movement. source

Politics: OWS members start trek to Washington DC

  • 240 mile march by Occupy Wall Street, from NYC to DC source
  • » Hitting the road: A group of OWS protesters have embarked on this lengthy walk, expecting to arrive in Washington DC on November 23rd, the congressional committee deadline on whether to keep the Bush-era tax cuts extensions President Obama agreed to last year. The Occupy movement, obviously, would like to see these cuts expire; while this would raise the tax burden of middle-income Americans to a remote extent, it would also cause a very large influx of revenue from the class most buoyed by the Bush tax policy — that vaunted 1%. The march consists of a mere dozen or so protesters right now, but they expect (we suspect rightly) to gain large numbers as they work their way towards the capitol.
