World: Another tough, depressing day for Iran’s opposition

  • What has happened to this religious system that it orders the killing of innocent people during the holy day of Ashura?
  • Iranian reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi • Asking a pretty damn obvious question in the wake of one of the most violent and deadly days of protest since the Iranian election. It’s gotten to the point that aides to Mir Hussein Mousavi (the guy who nearly won the presidential election) and Ibrahim Yazdi (who leads the banned Iran Freedom Movement) have been arrested. Shameful. Mousavi’s own nephew, Ali Mousavi, died in the protests yesterday, creating a Neda-like flash point. source

World: Iran: Oh, Neda died because she looked like a terrorist’s sister!

  • Yeah. That sounds suspect. The Iranian government says that the reason why the shooting victim known as Neda was killed in such a violent fashion despite the fact that she wasn’t even protesting was because she looked like the sister of a known terrorist. Oh, and they also blamed her death on the throngs of people protesting, or as they called them, “those groups who want to create division in the nation.” Hm. Hmmmmmmmm. source

World: Today, hundreds are ignoring orders and protesting in Tehran

  • They’re defying orders and remembering Neda. The protesters are holding a vigil at Tehran’s Haft-e Tir Square for Neda, the young woman violently killed on camera over the weekend. One man was chased into an alley by Basij militia members. Protesting the Basijs and chasing them off, they shouted: “Do not be scared. We are all together.” That’s re-affirming. source

World: How Neda has become a rallying cry for Iranian protesters

  • The deeply distressing video is becoming a defining moment in Iran’s disputed elections, in both social media and mainstream publications.
  • Mashable blogger Pete Cashmore • On the ramifications of this awful, awful video (note: *incredibly* graphic content, please don’t say we didn’t warn you), which has gotten far-reaching mainstream recognition since Mashable posted it yesterday. The woman in the video, Neda, was shot directly in the heart despite the shooter having a clear shot at her. Her death has had the side effect of creating a moment for protesters to rally around. Could Neda’s death have the same significance as Tank Man did? Time will only tell. • source
