Culture: That was quick: The Internet vets the new Miss USA, finds stuff

  • stripping Rima Fakih took part in a “Stripper
101” contest for a local radio
station. She didn’t strip, just danced
sexy (and stuffed bills in her bra).
  • movies Fakih was an actress in the
    raunchy 2008 short film “Throbbing
    Justice,” by Mantastic Films. No
    nudity, just schlock. source

Culture: Apparently people are upset about Miss USA contestants in lingerie

So, you have a contest seemingly designed to objectify women, then you get upset when they make it slightly more blatant? (The linked photo gallery’s a little racy for work.) source

Culture: Miss California firing: Was it politics or personnel issues?

  • Donald Trump claims she simply wasn’t doing her job. “I told Carrie she needed to get back to work and honor her contract with the Miss California USA organization, and I gave her the opportunity to do so,” he said.
  • Carrie Prejean claims it was political. “What’s behind this, I think, is a political debate. … From day one they wanted me out, and they got what they wanted,” she said. Her stance on gay marriage earned her 15 seconds of fame.

Culture: Miss California Carrie Prejean has officially jumped the shark

  • One stupid answer on gay marriage, and nobody can shut up about Carrie Prejean. Now, she’s in danger of losing her crown due to her high level of extracurricular activity. Idiot. source
  • Prejean’s used her notoriety to push forward her Christian beliefs, showing up in ads for her church and for the National Organization for Marriage – which might cost her the title. Idiot. source
  • But the thing that might affect her crown the most may be the photo that showed up on the Interweb the other day of a 17-year-old Prejean mugging for the camera wearing just her skivvies. Idiot. source

Culture, Politics: We were wondering the same thing about Perez Hilton

  • So wait … how is it Perez Hilton, the gossip blogger who built a career by drawing male genitalia and cartoon cocaine on celebrity photos, is now the media’s official spokesperson on one of the most important civil rights issues in America?
  • Helen A.S. Popkin • MSNBC columnist, on Perez Hilton’s sudden ascent to gay marriage activist following that whole Miss USA thing earlier this week. Nothing against Perez, but considering his fairly catty history, he’s kind of the wrong guy for the job. • source

Culture: Miss California defends her anti-gay-marriage comments

  • I knew at that moment after I’d answered the question, I knew that I was not going to win because of my answer. Because I had spoken from my heart, for my beliefs and for my God.
  • Miss California Carrie Prejean • On answering a question from Perez Hilton on gay marriage during the Miss USA contest honestly. She knew, after answering the question the way she did, she wasn’t going to win. But she’s fine with it. And honestly, you’re going to remember who Carrie Prejean is long after the what’s-her-name that won on Sunday night. • source

Culture: Did an anti-gay-marriage answer derail a Miss USA win? Probably.

  • A lot of people were shocked.
We were all kind of giving each other those eyes, we couldn’t believe it.
  • Miss Vermont Brooke Werner • On Miss California, Carrie Prejean’s, controversial answer to Perez Hilton’s question regarding gay marriage. Hilton, who is openly gay and famous for outing gay celebs, made it clear that he gave Prejean a low score based on her answer, and based on the way the pageant is tabulated, that might have cost her the competition. By the way, it was clear the question was in the mix, but it was pure chance that Hilton asked it and Prejean answered it. • source
