World: International Monetary Fund hacked; extent of attack unknown

  • We had an incident. We’re investigating it and the fund is completely functional.
  • IMF spokesman David Hawley • Revealing that the International Monetary Fund had in fact been hacked. The fund is important — it holds sensitive financial data for roughly 187 member nations, so of course it’s at least of some concern. And the software used to attack the IMF was reportedly unique. “This isn’t malware you’ve seen before,” notes Tom Kellermann, a cybersecurity analyst who had to deal with similar stuff during his time with the World Bank. That said, even if it was in fact a serious attack, it probably won’t be the worst situation the IMF has had to deal with in the past month. We’re sure this one takes the cake. source

World: Anonymous targeting Yemeni government; Yemenis won’t notice

  • 5% of Yemeni people use the internet on a regular basis source
  • » But that’s not stopping Anonymous: At least two Yemeni government sites have possibly been attacked by the nebulous, anonymous organization, including the Yemeni Ministry of Information and the site of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. And they even have a list of sites to target and stuff, which means that those five percent of Yemenis with internet access are going to have a hard time with the interwebs for the next little bit.

U.S.: Ohio State’s servers hacked; officials wait two months to tell people

  • 760,000 people’s private data at risk source
  • » Why did they wait? Well, the school wanted to double-check that this is what happened, so they used a private security firm to check what happened. Fortunately for affected users, while Ohio State says that they don’t think anyone’s data was actually taken (and the breach was more to see if the server was ripe to launch cyberattacks from), they’ve offered a year of free credit protection to those who were affected by the breach. Still, two months? That’s a long time to wait to inform people about something of this nature.

U.S., World: Hillary Clinton lays down the gauntlet against cyberattacks

  • Countries or individuals that engage in cyber attacks should face consequences and international condemnation. In an interconnected world, an attack on one nation’s networks can be an attack on all.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • In a speech she plans to give this morning on China’s reported hacking of companies like Google. Clinton reportedly also will bring up concerns specifically about the Google attack. China, for its part, says the attack shouldn’t be overstated. source
