Politics: Rush Limbaugh’s Chinese mockery: A possible double-standard?

  • 2006 Rosie O’Donnell made a kinda-crude impersonation of Chinese people when she was on “The View,” leading right-wing bloggers to jump all over her and force an apology from the firebrand.
  • 2011 Rush Limbaugh does the exact same thing – except five times as long, more exaggerated and while talking about the Chinese president. So, what’s gonna happen this time, guys? source

U.S., World: Economists forecast bad, bad times for US economy

  • The age of American predominance is over. The (Chinese) Yuan will be the world’s reserve currency within two decades.
  • MIT’s Simon Johnson • At an annual economic convention, regarding the US’s extended economic outlook. In short: it doesn’t look good. Harvard’s Dale Jorgensen, who also attended the convention, predicts that various Asian economies, particularly China, will overtake America as the world’s largest economy by 2020 or so, and that the United States should brace for “social unrest” following that development. Tech: Will China force Skype off the mainland? It’s a strong possibility

  • China wants to stamp out “unauthorized” VOIP services. The country’s Ministry of Information and Industry Technology said as much in a statement a couple of weeks ago – pointing out that the only services that could run VOIP services were China’s big telecom companies. Skype, still inexplicably partly owned by eBay for some reason, has been gaining major popularity in China lately. Which suggests that, while not explicitly stating it, that the Ministry’s statement was targeted at Skype, with the possibility of lawsuits. Skype, by the way, is on track to make $1 billion from an IPO next year, or more money than God. source

World: Bad idea: South Korea working on unification plans with the North

  • Let’s say you’re South Korea. North of you is one of the world’s most volatile countries, North Korea, and they’re your sworn enemy. West of you is China, the 900-pound gorilla of Asia. Now, let’s say you’re the president of South Korea, like this guy in the middle here, Lee Myung-bak. How do you handle this situation in such a way as to anger both of them at once? Here’s how – bring up plans to unify the two Koreas. Could you guys at least wait until Kim Jong-il is dead and his frumpy kid who skated into the job is the leader? You know they have the bomb, right? source

Tech: In the U.S., people smuggle drugs. In China, they smuggle iPads

  • 14 Chinese housewives were arrested for smuggling lots of tech devices into China
  • 88 the number of iPads the fourteen women had, roughly enough to create an iPad fort
  • 340 the number of phones they had; it was a total haul worth roughly $143,000 source
  • » Why the demand? Simple. The only version of the iPad sold in China is the wi-fi version. The 3G version (sold in Hong Kong) is in very high demand as a result. Plus, China has recently started taxing iPads brought in from Hong Kong, and on the other end, smugglers have been recruiting people without criminal records to make the runs from Hong Kong to China (for around $30 a run). We end this post with a visual image; imagine a woman with 65 smartphones wrapped around her chest and 20 more in her handbag. Yes, this actually happened.
