Tech: Nintendo’s big announcement: A Wii successor in 2012

  • And so the next generation of video games begins. With the Nintendo Wii starting to show its age, the company has announced that they’ll be bringing out a new home game console in 2012. Rumors suggest that the device will finally help the company catch up to Sony and Microsoft technology-wise, and that the device will be bigger than a breadbo… er, Xbox. The controller will also sport a built-in touchscreen, according to the rumor-mongers. We’ll probably know more when Nintendo demos the console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. If they release it, will you guys buy it? Or will you stay with that one console whose network has been down for almost a week and goes after hackers in court? source

World: Thousands pay homage to Indian spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba

  • A controversial but widely-admired spiritual figure: As many as 200,000 people have gone to visit Sathya Sai Baba since he died yesterday, and numerous prominent figures appear to be on the guest list — including Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and star Cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. This is a man who inspired such strong feelings that the co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe recently donated $108 million dollars for a hospital in Sai Baba’s name. But as he would not undergo scientific tests to prove his miracles were real, he scored many critics. Either way, he was widely revered. (photo via PTI) source

  • At first, it started getting windy. A dude on his cell phone gingerly walked into the bathroom as if things were normal. Then in a moment, it became clear that this was not just any windy airport terminal, and in a moment, the airport was a wreck. Harrowing. (By the way, the tornado was the strongest in the area in 44 years.) source

U.S.: St. Louis Lambert Airport quickly gets up to speed after tornado

  • The speed with which they got this airport up and running is impressive.
  • Traveler Meg Stowe • Reacting with shock not only at the damage St. Louis’ Lambert Airport received but also at the fact that it was open and operational today. The airport, which suffered some pretty rough damage two nights ago, nonetheless reopened to some flights yesterday and more today. The airport itself dates back to the 1950s and is a template of sorts for both the ambition the once-massive Gateway to the West once had, and the architectural damage was stunning to some. “To know what it was and to see what it is now, I’m just devastated,” said airport administrative assistant Vicki Ware, working on her day off. source

U.S.: Earl Albert Moore: Colorado mall-bombing suspect just out of prison

  • 1984 The first time lifelong criminal Earl Albert Moore was arrested. SInce then he’s built up a  lengthy record, including theft, drug possession and bank robbery.
  • 04/13/11 Albert, a 65-year-old man known for using many aliases over the years, was released from a Georgia federal prison after serving a sentence for bank robbery.
  • 04/20/11 A man attempts to set off a pipe bomb in a Colorado mall just two miles from Columbine High School. Today, Moore was named as the suspect. Wow. source
  • » And authorities don’t have any leads: It appears that Moore may have already left Colorado. Investigators have put out a call to every FBI office in the country in hopes of finding Moore, who they have a visual match for. The 6’2″ Moore is bald and has viking tattoos on each of his arms. And yeah, he’s dangerous, so if you run into him, call the cops.

World: Yemen: Obama backs Saleh’s resignation, but protesters don’t

  • yeah … Yesterday, Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh cut a deal ensuring that he would leave office in the next 30 days — in exchange for his immunity from prosecution. The plan, by the way, was supported by the Obama administration.
  • … but However, this isn’t good enough for protesters, who plan to escalate their opposition. They’re reportedly upset that the opposition brokered the deal for what they feel may be political gain that ignores the protesters’ demands. source

World: More in Chinese Easter arrests: Many others under house arrest

  • One of the deacons returned to his home last Friday afternoon and the police came to ask him if he planned to attend the Easter Sunday service. He said yes, so the police said from this moment, you cannot leave this house. I spoke to him an hour ago, and he was still not able to leave the house.
  • Shouwang Church member Kathy Lu • Describing what happened to one of the deacons before an attempted Easter service — authorities put him under house arrest. He and hundreds of others, in fact. But what’s absolutely bizarre is that while authorities arrested much of Shouwang Church’s congregation, the nearby Haidian Christian Church — which is state-sanctioned — was able to hold a service without any problems. The split emphasizes some big differences between the two churches — since Shouwang doesn’t tow to China’s regulations, it is “undergound” — a type of church that as many as 50 million Chinese people may take part in. We realize China has an atheist government and everything, but limiting this sort of free expression arbitrarily seems silly. source
