Culture: A quick, ten-second overview of this year’s Oscar nominations

  • 12 totally expected nominations for “The King’s Speech”
  • 10 nominations for the Coen Bros’ “True Grit” remake
  • eight nominations (far too few) for “The Social Network”
  • eight nominations (also far too few) for “Inception”
  • surprises Who decided to nominate Javier Bardem for Best Actor for a movie that absolutely nobody saw (“Biutiful”)? How many people even knew what this movie was before this morning? Raise your hand.
  • disses Among others: Mila Kunis in “Black Swan.” Andrew Garfield in “The Social Network.” Ryan Gosling in “Blue Valentine.” No best documentary nod for “Waiting for Superman.” Criminal! source
  • » And the ultimate diss: “Inception” got eight nominations, don’t get us wrong. The movie totally deserved all of them. But the one it was most deserving of which it did not get? Christopher Nolan didn’t get a best director nod for “Inception.” The category was stacked, admittedly, but the Coen Brothers may have been the weak men this year. On a side note, there could be one even bigger diss this year – if “Toy Story 3” doesn’t win an award outside of its animation comfort zone.

Culture: James Cameron spills the beans on “Avatar” sequels

  • Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.
  • James Cameron • Discussing the back-to-back “Avatar” sequels he’s currently writing. Question: What does he mean by “…at least in some form?” Flashbacks? Ghosts? Long-lost twins? Regardless, the two films are set to be released in 2014 and 2015, respectively, but that’s obviously subject to change. source

Culture: We have some Antoine Dodson news for you guys. Sit down first.

  • Before we reveal to you this news, start playing this video above. Get about a minute in. Then continue reading. *pause* OK, hopefully we haven’t lost you. Now that you’ve seen the clip above, imagine Dodson with his own reality TV show. Apparently he has a deal now. How the heck did he get from saving his sister from getting raped to this? Weird how this works. We hope he and his family are happy with his success. But he might be flying too close to the sun. source

Culture: Fox, unsurprisingly, nixes “Jesus Hates Obama” Superbowl ad

  • Here’s the surprising thing: The ad itself is pretty innocuous. It depicts an Obama bobblehead being pushed into a fishbowl by a Jesus bobblehead, apparently by way of telekinesis (it’s a bit unclear). All in good fun, right? And all that’s being advertised is a comedy website that peddles anti-Obama mugs, T-shirts, and (presumably) bobbleheads. So why the controversy? Well, the website is called “Jesus Hates Obama.” So, yeah. Probably not gonna fly during the biggest television event of the year. (We should note that, according to the site’s front page, they don’t actually believe that Jesus hates Obama; it’s just a provocative title to catch people’s eyes). source

Culture: Geoge Lucas is no doomsday worrier, spokeswoman says

  • NO George Lucas doesn’t think the world will end in 2012 source
  • » That’s according to a Lucasfilm spokeswoman, Lynne Hale, who says she spoke with George, and that he was joking when discussing the 2012 doomsday theory with Seth Rogen. Curiously, though, Rogen claimed Lucas discussed this for nearly twenty-five minutes, which means either Rogen grossly overstated the time spent on the topic (wholly possible), or George Lucas’ idea of acceptable joke length must be rather torturous for those around him. (Hat tip to you, sir, inothernews)

Culture: Seth Rogen’s “Green Hornet” reboot does kinda OK at box office

  • $34 million the opening for “The Green Hornet,” his biggest live-action opening ever – barely topping “Superbad” and “Knocked Up”
  • $120 million the reported budget for the film, which is six times the size of the “Superbad” budget; Rogen also produced “Hornet” source
