Tech: News flash: Tech sites use SCARE LANGUAGE to draw hits

  • lame Let’s say you’re a member of the tech press and you need a story on something. TIME TO DIG IN THE APPLE/VERIZON WELL AGAIN! WHOO! At this point, it’s totally cliche and you shouldn’t believe a word that they write.
  • lamer Now let’s say you want to stand out. PC Magazine went the “Rumored Verizon iPhone Crippled on CDMA… For Now” route. Why? Verizon can’t do voice and data at the same time. So it’s crippled. SCARE PHRASES. source

Politics, U.S.: Hey, the deficit’s actually getting smaller! Yay!

  • $125 billion decrease in the deficit over the last year source
  • » Of course, if you listen to a lot of conservative candidates this year, you probably wouldn’t know it. For example, Alaska’s Joe Miller proclaims, “the federal budget deficit was $1.4 trillion last year and is on track to be that, or more, this year.” Then again, Miller has already proved himself to be not the most responsible voice on fiscal issues, so perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Miller’s financial qualms aside, perhaps keep this number in mind next time a Republican decries Obama’s reckless government spending.

Tech: Yakov Smirnoff wants royalties: In Google’s future, car drives you

  • See that car in the middle with the weird crap on top of it? Well, we’re gonna let you in on a secret: Nobody is driving it. No person, that is. That car is being driven by Google’s artificial intelligence, which can detect cars and traffic patterns without any trouble. There was only one accident in the various tests, and it wasn’t even caused by Google’s car (it was rear-ended). The fuel they’re using? Ed Begley Jr.’s sense of self-satisfaction. source

Politics: James L. Jones: Total Obama administration outsider?

  • It took me a while to get the president to call me by my first name.
  • Obama’s former National Security Adviser, James L. Jones • In the middle of Obama’s first year on the job. Jones’ stay in that position was a tad, shall we say, rocky. Word on the street is that he never felt comfortable in the job, and was an outsider in an administration full of insiders. This feeling was reportedly cemented by Bob Woodward’s new book, “Obama’s Wars,” which reportedly has the former general calling Obama’s right-hand men “water bugs,” the “Politburo,” and the “Mafia.” The book apparently angered him so much that he mailed it directly back to Woodward. So yeah, not good terms. source

Politics: Wow: Jerry Brown somehow upstages Meg Whitman’s housekeeper

  • Dear Jerry Brown: Look, you had the perfect opening to totally win the California gubernatorial race. Meg Whitman was caught hiring an illegal immigrant and firing her under questionable pretenses – a political leveraging point that doesn’t come up every day. Too bad you had to call a police department last month, only to have one of your aides refer to Meg Whitman as a “whore.” Did you not think that was gonna get out and damage your campaign? The two really stupid decisions cancel one another out. That’s right, friends. California easily has the year’s dirtiest gubernatorial race. Sorry, New York. source

Politics: Three reasons Clarence Thomas’ wife is bad for Clarence Thomas

  • one Virginia Thomas works at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that suggested appointees for Bush while the 2000 election was contested.
  • two She’s already a well-known figure among conservative activists, and now heads a new Tea-Partyish, anti-Obama nonprofit called Liberty Central.
  • three There’s no word on where the sizable funding for the organization, which she hopes “will be bigger than the Tea Party movement,” has come from. source
  • » What this means for Clarence Thomas: He may have to recuse himself from a number of politically-oriented cases because of his wife’s extracurricular activities, which, as a private citizen, she’s totally allowed to do. If Liberty Central were to take off, it could be a glaring conflict of interest for the court’s most conservative judge.

Music: Yoko: John Lennon would TOTALLY use Twitter to protest war

  • 99% of the world is taking a stand against wars like Iraq and Afghanistan. John would have done that but he’d have loved the new communication media. He would have been writing statements and sending them out to the world as a blogger and a tweeter.
  • Yoko Ono • Suggesting that John Lennon, who would’ve been 70 today, would have used Twitter to protest the Iraq war. Dude did that silly bed-in thing to protest the Vietnam War, so why not? “When we did our bed-ins for peace against Vietnam the world just laughed at us,” she said. Ono, by the way, is getting up there – right now, she’s 77, though her interviewer says she doesn’t look a day over 50. Here’s the REAL question: Would Lennon put up with the crap over their albums not getting on iTunes? Seems like he wouldn’t. source
