Biz: Retailers are pushing Christmas in July…and August…and September…

  • Maybe we’re a bit optimistic, but we thought the Christmas season started right after Halloween. The newest recession fighting scheme is to start the holidays early – way early – so customers can avoid buying on credit. Word on the street is that select Sears and Toys R Us locations are already ramping up, some even giving out candy canes. CANDY CANES. In the summer. Is nothing sacred? source

Biz, Tech: Warning: Exploding iPods can lead to confidentiality agreements

  • I thought it was a very disturbing letter…They’re putting a life sentence on myself, my daughter and Ellie’s mum, not to say anything to anyone.
  • Ken Stanborough • On the letter he received from Apple after his daughter’s iPod exploded. He had contacted the company for a refund, which they offered – but with a nasty clause. If he took their money, he had to agree to keep quiet and if he failed to do so his family could face litigation. Yeah, he didn’t sign it. Take that, bullies!  • source

U.S.: Alessandra Stanley’s Cronkite obit won her a personal NYT copy editor

  • Remember that chick who dropped the ball at the NYT? The one that penned the Walter Cronkite obituary filled with *seven* factual errors, spelling mistakes and incorrect dates. Well, she’s still employed by the paper and now has a copy editor all to herself. Yay! Will they attach her to it with a leash, or what? source

Sports, Tech: So begins the love affair between the NFL, its fans and Twitter

  • Had a six inch Sub for lunch and now I’m headed back to practice number 2. Ugh
  • Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley • Wrote on Twitter during the first day of training camp. NFL players (and fans) are slowly starting to fall in love with the micro-blogging site, but execs and handlers aren’t really sure what to make of it yet. Some think it’s a killer marketing tool and a great way for people to get to know the person behind the helmet, while others are freakin’ out because there’s not much control you can have over it. Well, yeah…that’s kinda the point.  • source

U.S.: Obama hands out Presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 famous peeps

  • Talk about vip. Obama announced the 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom today. Among those to get America’s highest civilian honor: Stephen Hawking, Ted Kennedy, Harvey Milk and Sidney Poitier. I know, right? Pretty exclusive. We have to keep working on that cure for cancer, then maybe we’ll have a chance. source

Politics: David Pogue wants cell companies to suck it up and change

  • These messages are outrageous for two reasons. First, they waste your time. Good heavens: it’s 2009. WE KNOW WHAT TO DO AT THE BEEP.
  • David Pogue • In his blog that’s leading the way in the “Take Back the Beep Campaign.” Pogue argues that those messages that tell you how to leave a voicemail are a “blatant money-grab” and just plain stupid. As you can imagine, not many people disagree with him.  • source
