Tech: Fun guy chillin’ in South American rainforest finds plastic-eating fungi

  • Seriously, though this is kind of a big deal. Know that big problem we have? You know, the one involving a crapload of used plastic hanging around in landfills with nowhere to biodegrade for a couple million years? Well, Jonathan Russell might’ve solved that problem. See, Russell and his fellow Yale students went to Ecuador, where they found a new kind of fungus they’re calling Pestalotiopsis microspora. Big deal, you’re thinking. Anyone can find fungus anywhere! Well, something his fellow students found out after the fact is that this fungus can live on a diet of polyurethane alone — and even crazier, it doesn’t even need air to do so! In other words, we could potentially put it at the bottom of a landfill and cover it with plastic, and it would do the rest of the work. This might be game-changing if it works as advertised. U.S.: California’s legislature takes a pass on banning plastic bags

D.C. is OK with the idea of taxing plastic bags, but California’s Senate simply didn’t have the votes to ban them entirely. The bill failed last night. source

Politics: About taking off shoes at security checkpoints … it’s useless.

  • Another thing to thank the Underwear Bomber for – the dude helped us realize that the years of scanning our shoes through security checkpoints was complete bullshit! Know why? Our security could not actually detect the explosive plastic that Richard Reid‘s shoes were using. So, what’s worse, Janet Napolitano saying “the system worked” or the Bush Administration completely lying to everyone for seven years? You decide. source

Tech: Study: Guys, BPA is ruining your sex life. Uh, what’s BPA?

  • BPA is a chemical used in many plastics. New research into bisphenol-A, a chemical often mentioned as being dangerous for humans, suggests that guys in heat should be most concerned about its potential dangers. Research of 550 Chinese factory workers suggests that those who work closest with the chemical – used in a variety of products – have four times the normal level of sexual dysfunction. Thanks, random plastic we’ve never heard of. Thanks for nothing. source
