Politics: “Outed” Arizona sheriff won’t quit Congressional race after scandal

  • I’ve never defined myself by anything other than my service, and my duty, and what we should all be judged on in life. We’ve all had relationships, as is clear as day now — now this is national news — that I have had one where he wanted to harm me. And now this is rolled out, and the timing is more than a coincidence.
  • Pinal County, Ariz. Sheriff Paul Babeu • On having to “out” himself in light of a personal scandal. The sheriff, currently running for a Republican Congressional seat in Arizona, had been dogged by rumors that he threatened to deport an ex-lover to Mexico if their relationship a secret wasn’t kept. In order to deny those rumors, Babeu held a press conference and, in turn, announced his sexuality. Babeu, a hard-line conservative who had been a rising GOP star prior to the scandal, recently spoke at CPAC, where he called his primary opponent, Rep. Paul Gosar “most liberal Republican member of Congress.” Babeu thinks political rivals were behind the recent scandal. “I’ve got a record of service. people know me. I want to be judged, as every American should be, on results,” Babeu said. Does Babeu stand a shot at getting elected in the wake of this news? source

Culture: Archie’s got a new friend, and he’s (*gasp* spoiler alert) gay

  • *GASP* What will Archie and the gang think? The most conservative of daily comics, Archie, is getting a bit of a shake-up later this year, when a new character, Kevin Keller, steps onto the scene is. Thing is, though, he’s gay. And that might throw the sensibilities of the entire comic out of whack. Or not. Either way, on the cultural scale, Archie is now officially twelve years behind the sitcom’s acceptance of gay characters in the form of “Will and Grace.” source

U.S.: Florida police arrest deputy for allegedly sexually abusing immigrants

  • I can’t think of a worse betrayal of public trust. The fact is, he preyed on one of our most vulnerable communities.
  • Broward, Fla. Sheriff Al Lamberti • Discussing the charges against top deputy Jonathan Bleiweiss, an award-winning officer who allegedly preyed on illegal immigrants, sexually assaulting them. Bleiweiss, who is openly gay, previously was seen as a model police officer and has been the subject of newspaper articles praising his pioneering status in the community. • source

U.S.: Now’s a bad time to be a gay Iowa politician, due to death threats

  • Why the hate? Because gay marriage is legal in Iowa. State Sen. Matt McCoy, a Democrat from Des Moines, recently took a death threat by phone, apparently because he’s openly gay. Homosexuality in Iowa is a touchy issue at the moment due to the fact that the State Supreme Court recently legalized gay marriage in the state. We’re sure the guy behind the death threat is also behind this. source
