  • Meanwhile, while Glenn Beck and Lawrence O’Donnell are arguing/agreeing about whether or not the Japan nuclear crisis is going to end the world (it’s not), thousands have been killed, thousands more are currently without a roof over their head, and millions more could face electricity issues for months after the Japan quake seriously damaged the power grid. Good to see they’re keeping things in perspective by arguing over who’s right. source

Politics: Max Headroom: How 24-hour news cycles numb grave tragedies

  • Look, it’s been a long week. It feels like a lot has happened since the events of last Saturday, and it might feel good to have a palate-cleanser here, but instead, here’s this Lawrence O’Donnell clip. This whole Arizona debate has been about tone – the whole thing. It’s never been about looking for blame, even if that’s what some saw in it. It was a valid argument then and it still is a week later. That’s why this clip makes us uncomfortable. We somehow got from tragedy to Sarah Palin to this story angle, where it feels like everything has come full-circle – the emotion isn’t there. It’s just the acerbic commentary that doesn’t help as much as it thinks it does. There’s a good debate here – about what Palin or other commentators on both sides should or shouldn’t have done. If anything, the circumstances lent themselves to these questions. Now it’s time to let the questions stand on their own, without the shadow of the tragedy. Let’s make them two separate things.
  • Chris Christie: Not arrogant enoughYou know, in the face of all the accolades that GOP darling Chris Christie, New Jersey’s governor, is getting for his approach to politics, what’s most refreshing is the way that he brushes them off like they’re not a big deal. Christie – again – says he’s not running for president. Why doesn’t anyone believe him?
  • A welcome Zodiac respiteAs ugly as this news week got, at least we had this story about the zodiac signs to use as a breather. Even as we had our own qualms with a certain angle of this story, we can say that it was the palate cleanser we needed. Rachel Maddow’s excited for the chance to focus on something else for a moment.

Politics: Alvin Greene sticking to those talking points a little too much

  • So, Lawrence O’Donnell is our hero. Faced with the halting Alvin Greene on Monday night’s show, he starts off questioning by jokingly asking, “Are you a witch?” Given the opportunity to basically own the conversation, Alvin Greene completely flubs it, by answering that “DeMint started the recession.” He does the same thing for the next question. And the one after that. Dude, O’Donnell was throwing softballs your way. SOFTBALLS!  source

  • Mike Huckabee: Hi-lariousOn “Red Eye” the other night, the former Arkansas governor suggested – in response to Sarah Palin calling marijuana a “minimal” problem – that Palin was using coke. Hilariously. Huckabee wins the award for “funniest Republican.”

  • Sharron Angle folds Protip: If you only show your face on conservative news programs and only play to the base, eventually you won’t know how to handle tough questions from real reporters, a situation that KLAS-TV noticed and MSNBC regaled.

  • Rahm emanuel radiatesDoesn’t Obama’s top dude sound like he knows the score here with the energy bill? You know it. Problem is, he (and Obama) are trying to push it during the oil spill, which seems like it might dampen the whole idea altogether.

  • After Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen made a point about terror that MSNBC analyst Lawrence O’Donnell didn’t like on Friday’s “Morning Joe,” O’Donnell went into this fit of rage that surprisingly didn’t turn him green and muscular. OK, O’Donnell made a good point. So did Thiessen. No reason to get angry, dude. Unless you’re trying to make good TV. source

Politics: Yes or no? Rep. John Culberson spins hard on “Hardball”

  • Both sides look bad here to some degree – there’s smoke coming out of the ears of “Hardball’s” Lawrence O’Donnell, while Rep. John Culberson does everything he can to avoid saying “yes” or “no” to questions which circle around whether Medicare and Social Security are socialism, and how he can support them when he doesn’t support health care. It gets ugly, even for a political debate on “Hardball.” source
