U.S.: Rage against snow not really new thing with New Yorkers

  • 1969 Former mayor John V. Lindsay faced the kind of rage about a blizzard that Michael Bloomberg is currently facing.
  • 1996 Brooklyn borough president Howard Golden, accused the sanitation department of simply ignoring Brooklynites.
  • 2000 Rudy Guliani scored points against the Port Authority by ripping their inability to get the airports up to speed again.
  • 2001 Weatherman felt the rage of New Yorkers after a massive blizzard didn’t actually produce the pain promised. source

Politics: Ed Rendell brings up good point for exactly the wrong reason

  • We’ve become a nation of wusses. The Chinese are kicking our butt in everything. If this was in China do you think the Chinese would have called off the game? People would have been marching down to the stadium, they would have walked and they would have been doing calculus on the way down.
  • Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell • Complaining about a football game cancelled because of snow. Wait … comprehend that a second. The governor of Pennsylvania is really annoyed because a football game was cancelled because of snow. And as a result, he’s bringing up the industrial fight the U.S. is losing with China. He’s thinking of a fairly smart concept, but trying to apply it to football. We can’t get behind Ed Rendell on this, not because his overarching point isn’t fair, but because he’s bringing it up over a delayed football gamesource

Tech: Nokia fires fresh salvo in ongoing patent war with Apple

  • 13 new patent claims made by Nokia against Apple source
  • » Whiny babies on both sides: Nokia, which hasn’t exactly been doing all that great in the market lately (but created a lot of fundamental technologies for mobile devices), sued Apple over a bunch of patents last year. Then Apple countersued. Nokia then went as far as asking the U.S. International Trade Commission to halt imports of Apple products. You know, how much does suing the hell out of one another solve? Nothing.

Culture: Weight Watchers devotees collectively freak out about points

  • I don’t want to be forced to choose veggies. I do NOT like veggies or fruit. I feel like I am being forced to ‘diet,’ and that is what I DO NOT WANT.
  • Some whiny baby on a Weight Watchers forum • Complaining about the changes to the company’s well-known points system, which previously scored processed foods and unprocessed foods about the same way. Now, the new system encourages eaters to have fewer processed foods and as many fruits and vegetables as they’d like. Seeing a bunch of people on a weight-loss plan collectively freak out is kind of entertaining. source

Politics: Democrats realize that town halls not best way to reach constituents

A year ago, this dude yelled at Arlen Specter. Now he’s out of the Senate race, and Democrats aren’t holding town hall meetings anymore. Coincidence? We think not. source

Politics: Blog-blabber: We’re shorter than both The Wrap and Newser

  • long Sharon Waxman of The Wrap complains about Newser summarizing her articles with scant credit (804 words).
  • short Michael Wolff’s Newser then summarizes her complaints in a much more concise format (133 words).
  • shorter We see the two of
them whining about attribution and decide
to one-up both of them (59 words). source

Culture: “Terminator Salvation” director McG really hates his clever name

  • Believe me, I know, people hear the name and they just think, ‘That guy must be a jerk.’ And having it hasn’t helped me, that’s for sure. But it’s what everybody has called me forever.
  • Director McG • Who has gotten a lot of mileage out of a career that started with co-writing songs for Sugar Ray, but says his name has become a huge impediment as a major action movie director. Along with his fear of flying – his inability to get on a plane a few years back cost him the chance to direct the last “Superman” movie. He’s better now, but it sounds like he has some issues. Like his name – which he’s been called since he was a kid. • source

Politics: Rush Limbaugh throws monkey poo at Colin Powell. RUSH MAD!

  • What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party.
  • Rush Limbaugh • Complaining about Powell’s comment that the Republican party is in deep trouble, and would be better off without the radio-show loudmouth. Limbaugh also disliked Powell’s support of Obama. • source

Culture, Politics: Bill O’Reilly didn’t see “Milk” because of Sean Penn. His loss.

  • He’s a great actor, and if you hire him, you’ll get a good performance. I’m just not going to give a guy who gives aid and comfort to people like Ahmadinejad, Hugo Chavez and Saddam Hussein, when he was alive, my 10 bucks. That’s my right as an American.
  • Bill O’Reilly • Who’s “a big movie guy” but will not spend money to see Sean Penn in a movie. We hope he changes his mind, because we think an upcoming flick of his might be right up his alley. • source

Culture, Politics: Whiny TV execs ticked at Obama’s constant nation addresses

  • These repeated interruptions – and the rumor of even more to come – really make it difficult to build audience flow and loyalty. We will all lose one or two million dollars for this.
  • A (obviously anonymous) network executive • On the fact that Barack Obama has the gall to request another nation address on “American Idol” Tuesday! I mean, what the heck? It’s not like anyone else is struggling. (ABC, by the way, will be preempting episodes of “According to Jim,” which we’re surprised is still on the air, just like everyone else besides Jim Belushi.) • source
