Biz: We hear Google bought this NYC building for over a billion dollars

  • See this building right here? It’s iconic in NYC – the former Port Authority building in the city. Guess who now owns it? That’s right, Google. In what could be the largest real estate deal in the U.S. this year, Google reportedly spent $1.9 billion on this building, which the company already uses for offices and data centers. Just to be meta, we grabbed the image using Street View. source

Politics: Pat Robertson: We need to stop criminalizing marijuana (really!)

  • I mean, I’m not exactly for the use of drugs, don’t get me wrong, but I just believe criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of just a few ounces of pot, and that kind of thing, I mean it’s costing us a fortune, and it’s ruining young people.

Tech: Christmas present for old tech nerds: Byte Magazine coming back!

  • Why did this magazine stop publishing? Byte, an overtly technical magazine, kinda faded away back in the U.S. back in 1998 (but continued publishing in other countries), which is too bad, because it had a style all its own – less what-if pontification like Wired, more nitty-gritty detail. For much of its existence in the U.S., it also had Jerry Pournelle, a science fiction author who interspersed geek stuff into homespun, slice-of-life back-page articles. But now, it’s coming back as a professional-oriented consumer technology magazine. The reboot should be interesting, because even though the magazine started one of the first online services (Byte Information eXchange, better known as BIX), they missed out on the social media revolution completely. When they shut down, the Pentium II was top of the line and Apple’s first iMac had yet to be released. Everything has changed since then. Hopefully Byte can catch up to current technology trends quickly. (Thanks to Digibarn for the scan of Byte’s very first issue.) source

U.S.: We’re on our way to Hawaii to stalk Mr. Barack “what lame duck?” Obama

  • OK, not to be jerks to you guys, but we think we’ve put in a pretty good year of blogging. And, well, Obama’s in Hawaii, and Hawaii’s gonna be warm but rainy all weekend. In other words, perfect stalking weather. We want to follow the president along with his family and learn the truth … is Obama in fact Muslim? When he goes to open up presents under his palm tree on Christmas day, will there be a star on top of that palm tree? Or a crescent? The Coast Guard is watching out for people like us, but we’re watching out for people like the Coast Guard. Plus, we have hundreds of thousands of dollars to throw around! We can totally pay their $32,000 fine! Plus, Julius is a robot without any feelings! We don’t care if he goes to jail! (But seriously, this is a long way to say that we’ll be taking it easy for a few days, with fewer posts. Because we want to go to Hawaii to stalk Obama. That’s right! See you this weekend, Sasha and Malia!) source
